Sonar X3 crashing constantly
Hello everyone, right now I apologize for my bad English. I'm using Sonar X3 and have a project with about 35 tracks. The problem is that I need to record some voices and it is impossible to do this without the sound starts to hang in the middle of recording. I then thought to export the music and create a new project just to have fewer channels and can record the voices. What I wonder is if Sonar is not a tool to compile the tracks so that they are temporarily static and has become entrenched with the effects and issues, leaving the lighter program for recording the next layers. I've tried turning off the recording FX effects and rising latency to 512, but did not help much. And that I could easily regress the process, because my PC is not holding major projects. I use a 3rd generation Core i7, 16GB DDR3 1333 mhz, M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8r. Since now, thank you all.

Crashing can be caused by many things - drivers, windows updates, antivirus software, bad plugin, corrupt projects. See if you can track down where the problem is coming from first. Does this happen in brand new projects? Does this happen on other computers? Does it produce a crash report and .dmp file? Do you have any applications that are constantly connected to the internet like Dropbox? Have you tried clean installing SONAR X3? Do you have the latest updates for SONAR X3? http://www.cakewalk.com/S...reader.aspx/2007013355

So, is the program crashing, or is it just really slow, or both? If it crashing, then there may be information in the Windows Event Viewer that you can copy and paste into this thread, and that may help us figure out what is happening. Crashing is likely drivers, mismatched sample rates, download/install issues with Sonar, or plugins behaving badly. There are ways to help get to the bottom of things, so please start by answering Dan's questions in the above post, and also answering my questions in the beginning of this post. If your projects have a lot of latency, where sound is delayed when you are tracking, then there are likely settings that can be changed or plugins that can be swapped out to help make that better. If this is what is happening, please let us know. Bob Bone

Thank you very much for the answers first will answer the questions of Dan Gonzalez. Does this happen in brand new projects? Yes Occurs in old projects and new. Does this happen on other computers? I have a notebook that I use sometimes when I need to make a recording of a live show. It has a much lower hardware, but the impression I have is that Sonar X3 it works better than on my desktop. Does it produce a report and crash. Dmp file? Neither knew of the crash report. Do you have any que applications are Constantly connected to the internet like Dropbox? No. I do I disable all programs and driver that can steal processing my PC. Have you tried clean installing SONAR X3? Yes, but it did not work. Do you have the latest updates for SONAR X3? Yes, I have downloaded and installed all the updates from Sonar X3, but problems persist.

Hello robert_e_bone. Sonar does not quite catch the point I need to exit the program. What happens is that when I lower the latency to 256 or 512 to be able to make a recording, the program starts giving crackling sound during recording. Thus the musician who is playing loses track of the metronome and I need to go back to writing again. If I turn off and on the FX effects the program appears to normalize again for a while, but soon returns to give these crackling sound again. If I increase the latency to 1024 these problems no longer occur, however, it is impossible to record an instrument or voice with such latency. Most of the time processing of my machine and the amount of memory consumed are nearing the minimum, and only these crashes is that they suffer from a peak and then fall sharply again. I can not understand what happens.

Please can you update your signature with your hardware and software specs (like mine) and let us know about the windows event viewer. Please ensure you are running 6.1.9 and you have run windows update several times: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Download/Fast-Track-Ultra-8R-Drivers Also defrag your hard drive (which may help with your latency). The engine is crashing not the application right?

The Fast Track driver is already updated, was one of the first things that I thought were occurred. I'll try to see the errors in the windows event viewer and lap here to find the result.

> Sonar does not quite catch the point I need to exit the program. So this appears to be an engine crash NOT an application crash. You will be looking towards improving your latency. So please run windows update several times and then defrag to start with. You may even want to run chkdsk first as a precaution. And please let us know your hardware and software specs in full. There could be other areas to look at as well such as disabling plugins. Thanks..

OK - thanks for the replies. 1. When you installed Sonar X3, did you run the installer program with the 'Run As Administrator' option? Please understand that this is not the same thing as having a user account with Administrator privileges. 2. Is your Windows maintenance up to date? If not, then please run Windows Update over and over again, until all maintenance is applied and there are no more patches to apply. 3. Please try a new project, and have NO plugins, and see if the problems exist in this manner. Thanks, Bob Bone

I just saw your other response. So, please post information on your latency: 1. Audio Interface: Sample Rate, and ASIO Buffer Size 2. Sonar: Sample Rate, Record Bit-Depth, Driver Mode, Total Roundtrip Latency I am guessing that your latency issues are related to a plugin that is meant to be used for mixing/mastering, rather than for tracking, but I will understand better once you respond with the above information. I am also wondering what happens with this latency issue if in the project that this occurs, if you hit the 'E' key on your computer keyboard, to Bypass All Effects. If the latency goes away, then indeed one or more of your plugins is causing the latency, and is either a plugin that uses look-ahead processing, or lots of CPU to do whatever it is doing. (after testing the results, hitting 'E' again will turn the effects back on, so not to worry). Bob Bone

I can attest to this: when I first installed X3 I did not install “As an Administrator”. My default account is in the Administrators group and I realize that these are not the same thing. Nonetheless, I installed without first reading the readme file (will not do that again :( ), which clearly stipulates how to do the installation. In any case, I started having all kinds of problems, including frequent crashes, even after all of the patches. Eventually, I uninstalled X3 and reinstalled it. Everything has been running smoothly since!

I hope this helps. I was having constant instant crashes for a few months and finally solved it through working on a different problem I was having strangely enough. What I noticed, in my case, was it seemed to be the audio driver was causing the crashes because I couldn't even get the program to fully quit after the crash unless I completely rebooted. One day I just unplugged my audio interface and finally got the program to quit. So I figured that's probably where the problem was. What was happening was this. I have a Roland Quad Capture USB interface, however I also use a POD HD guitar processor which also has it's own audio drivers. Somewhere along the way, Sonar switched my routing and was splitting the audio processing between the 2 devices instead of just using the Roland, which is the way it was supposed to be set up. I went into preferences and put everything back to 1 driver for in/out and no more crashes. Do you have more than 1 audio driver on your system? Or did you at one time? Make sure you're only using one. I hope this helps.
