Sonar X3C - loads normal template - can't stop it! Help!

I had this problem earlier - never was able to solve it. A computer accident caused me to re-format the HDD and re-install Sonar X3. No auto-load of the normal template at first - which is good.

Then, I installed the X3C patch - now I have the same problem again: Sonar cannot open without loading the Normal template. The settings in "Preferences | Advanced" have no effect on things.
Thoughts?

Yep - have tried doing that about 2 dozen times.
It doesn't "take."
So . . . what the heck is going on? Wait for X3D???

Is that ini file's attributes set as "read only" by chance?

Okay - I found two instances of Cakewalk.ini - neither were "Read only"

I'd rename one of them Cakewalkini.bak or something like that and see if that helps. I think I remember your last thread about it. Not sure what to say to fix it but it should work, or it does here anyway. Renaming those files and starting again would be a good starting point. You can always go back to them if you want just by changing the name back.

Pretty sure this setting is stored in the registry, so you may need to look there for permissions.  Try renaming the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X3 to X3.bak.

If it fails, it's a permissions error and registry permissions errors are a pain in the backside.  If it works, try running SONAR again (you'll have lost some personalisation, but you can go back by renaming the key again) and see if you can get that setting to stick now.

Likely files permission issue!
What I would do is to run it as administrator once! Any thoughts?

No CW version has ever loaded the Normal Templet on start up. I don't know if this is a setting that was set long ago and has migrated itself to every version since. But no I'm not having this issue.

Re: Sonar X3C - loads normal template - can't stop it! Help! 2013/11/08 13:32:37 (permalink)
I have tried the "Run as administrator" option; it doesn't work.

I realize that very few people are having this problem - and I never had it myself - until this version. Running WIN 7 64-bit OS - nothing else is unusual.

Although . . . in the "Preferences" area, several of the option area are listed in blue instead of black. This includes the "Advanced" area. A clue?

The items in the left hand column of the Preferences dialog listed in blue are the "Advanced" options associated with the Advanced radio button at the bottom of the dialog. They are displayed in blue in all the X series SONAR versions.

Hi Phil,

The blue areas your seeing indicate that those areas in preferences are Advanced options. That doesn't have anything to do with the issue you are having. In Preferences | File | Advanced you mention that the normal setting for controlling this behavior is not working, do any other items in there seem to work or is it only that one setting? Please turn On "Allow Only One Open Project At A Time" and try to open a project make a change and while open attempt to open another project. You should be prompted to save the project before the other one is opened.

when you start sonar do you get the quick start menu? Here you can open your files differently. I think that the quick start is also a registry issue.
Also in preferences/files/advanced  uncheck the open sonar with normaal template.

Lance - the "Allow Only One Open Project At A Time" seems to work just fine.
It is also interesting to note that - if I check "On Startup Load Normal Template" - it does not stay checked once I exit Preferences. Yet, the template always loads on startup.
Strange . . .

In other words, the box always stays unchecked, yet the template always loads, and I seem to be unable to affect its state by checking or unchecking the box.

Once this happens, can you close that project and start a new one with the templet of your choice?

Some free advice so that's what its worth, but I'd either call tech support or start over with X3 install. You've had problems from the beginning. People were telling you to right click the installer and run as administrator but for what ever reason you didn't believe them. My guess is you've got registry keys that didn't get written correctly and possibly dll's that didn't get registered correctly. I know it's frustrating and I hope you get it worked out.

No wonder, if you installed it without "run as administrator"?
How about try to reinstall it "as administrator" like other user mentioned, since it's also related to the Window's Registry as well! Hope this helps!

Me thinks this is one for Sonar's install build dev to think on - it is quite unusual for an application to request the user to manually execute a setup with Administrator privilege, at least these days. Most installations now automatically request Administrator privilege during execution so that it's not possible to do otherwise. Easy-peasy, solves the problem, work fine - last long time....

.msi usually do request user elevation. Whether most .exe installers do, I don't know because it's become so second nature for me to run them as administrator to prevent the type of problems it seems Phil is going through. Why not take the safe route for something as important as your DAW. Just saying....

I've never installed a version of Sonar by right clicking the installer and run as administrator including X-3c and I don't have the problem that Phil is having. Just saying....

If you run the install again as administrator and install advanced setup with only the basic install your problems should be fixed.

Actually, these suggestions have already been tried. I even re-formatted the HDD. I re-installed from the disk, and then it worked fine until X3c was installed.

It does sound like the registry is jacked up somehow. I wonder if re-personalizing SONAR would help? Be aware the starting SONAR with the CTRL and SHIFT keys held down will overwrite all the files in your user directory\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\your version of SONAR. So if there is anything in there you want to keep, make copies beforehand. I would also make sure that SONAR was running as administrator while holding the CTRL and SHIFT keys.

Re: Sonar X3C - loads normal template - can't stop it! Help! 2013/11/09 12:47:45 (permalink)
I believe that the Registry key which affects this is "AlwaysLaunchTemplate"
Now, here's where it gets really weird.
The value there is set to "0" (off) [just as it is in Sonar under Preferences]
If I change it in Sonar or in the Registry, it doesn't "take" - something on the Sonar start re-sets it back to "0" BUT, Sonar still loads the template.
In other words, I change the entry in both Preferences and the registry, but no - it doesn't take, and it doesn't work.
Bug report . . .

I would call to Tech Support before bothering to file a problem report. They are in a better position to assess whether this is a bug or a problem related to your particular setup. Still would try re-personalization because it fixes some registry issues.
