Sonar X3d and my Mouse
I just recently installed Windows 8.1 x64 and Sonar X3d x64 on a newly home built computer. All installations went well including sound card drivers of the Emu 0404 PCI and GuitarPort\PodFarm. Music played on these devices sounded well and everything was nice and stable. Then I decided to dig in and learn Sonar X3d by first opening the first tutorial project "Mixing Tutorial." The project played smoothly and sounded nicely on my speakers. I noticed the master bus meter was peeking into the red region. So I decided to pull down its fader. As I placed the mouse cursor on the fader and clicked, the cursor disappeared and the fader jumped all the way to the top of its range. When I released the mouse button, the cursor reappeared exactly where I placed it but the fader went all the way up forcing me to stop the music and turn down the volume on the speakers. Several more attempts to adjust the fader failed as it was either jumping to the top or going to INF without me sending it there. I checked all the controls including Pan on Sonar's UI - track view and console view and they all exhibited this behavior. This is not the case with plugins as the controls on their UIs can be adjusted smoothly. It's just on Sonar's UI. I opened an old project and the same behavior occurred. The mouse that I'm using is a Logitech MX310 USB which is about 7 years old. I had checked their website for software for this model compatible with Windows 8.1 and this is what I saw " Will provide basic navigation in Windows 8 style UI. Features programmed in SetPoint software may not function in this mode." No software but that statement. Is this the cause of my problem with Sonar? My computer specs are: Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard, AMD FX4300 CPU, Asus/nVidia 210 silent videocard, and two 500 gb Western Digital harddrives.

Please remove any Logitech software to do with your mouse (it's generally useless bloatware) in Add/Remove Programs (i.e. Setpoint), reboot and use the drivers Windows supplies should hopefully be automatically detected automatically. You may need to run Windows update afterwards. You can shut down Windows by continuously pressing ALT-F4 if you lose control of your mouse. Cheers...

I didn't install any Logitech driver and other software for the mouse. I'm using what Win 8.1 installed. I have rebooted several times and uninstalled/reinstalled Sonar but the problem persists. This is not happening on PodFarm, Emu PatchMix nor any other software with movable controls. When I click on a movable controller on the Sonar UI and then scroll with the mouse wheel there is slow movement but the increments are too large, say from -6.1 to -4.7; you cannot do any proper mixing with that. I'll do a search to buy another brand with Win 8 compatible drivers and software and then see what happens.

For fine control try pressing the SHIFT key while using the mouse wheel.

I don't think its your hardware or your operating system. My Sonar X3 just started doing this on my computer about a half hour ago. I am on Windows 8. It has operated normally for about a month before this. BTW, I am on X3 b build 216. I really sucks, renders itself useless. X2 does not have the problem, and no other software I tried has the problem. I tried a bunch of other software, and the mouse is fine. The problem is X3, I suppose it could be some weird setting, or another case of the programmers deciding to help us by automating but it didn't come out right. But it only happens in X3. I can tell you it really sucks. I really am seriously considering going back to 8.5. It worked in a fashion I could understand. Good luck. Edit: I forgot to mention I also tried re-booting the computer. Its a problem of X3, I am pretty sure.

I think its a little bit of a leap of faith to think this is the same issue when most other people do not have this issue so there's probably a solution, and besides pharoh you don't tell us about your mouse. What you really need to do though is upgrade to X3D, reset and rescan your plugins as you are running b. Cheers. And can both of you please run windows update.

The thing is this computer was meant to be offline, so automatic updates are not possible. I have another computer for internet activity. Any updates would have to come from a downloadable patch and saved on a USB flash drive. I checked Microsoft site and saw no updates for Win 8.1. However, Scook has provided a workaround that works. You first click the controller area to select it, then press the Shift key and scroll with the mouse wheel and the value increases or decreases by 1. The only problem I can see with this solution is that automation is going to have to be manually input. The slider on the transport module on the Control Bar has the same problem and the mouse wheel has no effect on that. Moving nodes around on an envelope work as they should. Anyhow, I am eager to learn this new version and start creating music with it. Thanks for the scope Scook.

It is possible I have a different but similar problem. I don't understand this. Of course I have been wrong so many times, because I am old and new stuff puts me off. And thank goodness for the helpers on this forum, that have set me straight when I couldn't figure out more or less simple things, like v-vocal coming up hidden from view. But on the other hand I am not stupid (I hope and think). I really believe this is X3. Everything worked fine until two hours ago. Then all of a sudden the only two states (after you try and use your mouse) for volume or gain are 0 or -inf. The only pan position is 0. It doesn't matter if you are in the inspector or not. The same condition is with all with all knobs. So for instance, the EQ in Pro-channel is always set to maximum frequency if you mouse click it. All other programs work great. Only X3 is messed up. Even X2 works fine with the mouse. I didn't install update "d" or "c" because there are many comments on the forum about stability. I really treasure stability over features. And the question remains why this should start all of a sudden. The mouse worked fine this afternoon. I don't want to update windows because Microsoft wants to force me to 8.1 and I am not sure about the drivers. Its getting to the point where Microsoft interrupts me daily wanting to make me update to 8.1. I am still resisting. Besides, this just should not happen and should not have happened. Mouse technology is a basic service, not moon landing stuff. Why would things change all of a sudden? When I get an hour I will call tech support and see if they know what the problem is. In the meantime I will familiarize myself with X2. Or just install 8.5 and start smiling again. I am not comfortable at all with X3. I basically have stopped making new recording projects because I know it will be so aggravating. I note one more time I must be getting too old. Not that it should matter, my mouse is a Logitech wireless mouse. Works great except for Sonar X3. I have a wired mouse in storage. I will bet serious cash that nothing changes if I use it. Thanks for your comments and concern. And I apologize for the semi-rant. I know we all pull in the same direction, and I really appreciate any help, and I wish I could offer more advise myself to this forum.

Maybe it's because Sonar has access to internals deep down in the system (I have no idea) but it's the only program that I've ever run that screwed up my mouse's behaviour. There have been several posts regarding erratic mice.

Now that I more carefully read DeBro's post, he has X3 "d" and therefore the problem is not in installing the updates to X3. So the suggestion to go from "b" to "d" really does not make sense to me. Like I said before, I will try and call tech support, and in the meantime, I think I will install 8.5. Thanks for any help.

The obvious thing to do is run windows update and install x3d. Most of us are running it without issue. Yes there have been issues with mice and but the symptoms are not the same as what is being reported here. This is clearly an issue to do with the mouse driver, not running windows update or not being on the latest sonar patch or a combination of these factors (that's why you shouldn't conclude just because person has done X, then you don't need to do X yourself). You need to get yourself on a base layer. There is no reason not to install X3d it is Cakes best patch yet. Another thing to do is run driver boost (could be your chip set drivers for instance). http://forum.cakewalk.com...aspx?m=2928792&p=1If that doesn't work there could be other suggestions. Ask yourself why others aren't experiencing this (the smoking gun here is neither of you are installing updates) and please let us know what Cake support says (they will certainly ask you to install D BTW). BTW if your strategy is never to run Windows Update then this policy need to be reviewed (it is far better to run Windows Update than not to run Windows update, 5 years ago there may have been valid reasons but not any more). What you need is a decent backup strategy in case you need to roll back (and that rarely is required nowadays).

OK I installed all windows updates. This took way too long because windows had an error for update service and I had to go in Windows program and delete all of the past updates, and several other procedures that were on the Microsoft website. But I am fully updated now. Then I updated to X3d. There was all kinds of questions and answers about Celemony. Anyway, its all updated and still X3 does not support the mouse properly, while all other programs are fine. When I can I will call support,

I have found the culprit that is causing the problem. It's Windows 8.1 display settings. I got the idea of starting over from the very beginning with a clean re-install of Win 8.1. I then went through the installation of the motherboard drivers and the updated nVidia graphic card drivers. I left every thing at their default settings including screen resolution at 1680 X 1050. Next I install the Emu PatchMix and 0404 drivers so that Sonar can immediately see a soundcard when fully installed. Then I installed Sonar without the d patch; open the Mixing Tutorial project and checked the movement of the faders, pan knob and other movable controls with the mouse clicked in both the Console an Track Views. Everything functioned as they should. The d patch was then installed; open the Mixing Tutorial once again and check the movement of the controls with the mouse clicked while the project was playing. Still no problems whatsoever. The project played nice and smooth while I was moving the various controls with the mouse. With a resolution of1680 X1050 and Win 8.1 display setting at default, I can barely see the text in Sonar on a 20 inch monitor screen. This was where the trouble started when I decided to make a change in the feature " CHANGE THE SIZE OF ALL ITEMS" in the display settings. I can tell you that choosing custom setting and going beyond the 125% mark, Sonar's controls go haywire with the mouse clicked. Choosing a lower resolution is not an option because modules in the Control Bar become off screen and the UI does not look as elegant. So for now I'll have to probably use Win 8.1 magnify utility set to 125% to get around Sonar's UI when looking at text until I can step up to a 27 inch monitor screen.

I talked to tech support, and evidently DeBro is correct. You intermittently will run into this problem if your monitor is not set to 100 percent. Sometimes works OK, other times not. I set to 100 percent and the mouse works. I'm at 1920x1080, so regular text is very small. Sonar looks kewl at 1920x1080. Alex, thanks for the concern.

Thanks for all the helpful input and ideas guys! I finally found the time to give some of these suggestions a try, and found what appears to be my solution - and hopefully it will help others.
For me, the answer was the adjustment of the Text Enlargement in Windows 8.1 Control Panel/Personalization. Having a new larger monitor with higher rez, I had attempted to increase the text size for improved legibility. Evidently, Sonar X3d doesn't care for this idea! So I returned my text size to 125% (recommended), rebooted the box. and all appears to be working as expected! (knock wood!)
Now Cakewalk needs to address this bug for future patching!
Thanks again for all your help everyone!

I reported this months ago...related to screen resolution and settings... Has been this way since X3 was released...just an FYI... I had the exact same problem when I first installed X3. Reset resolution from 1920 x 1080 to 1600 x 900 and problem disappeared. I use a Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse. It's not mouse related...it's X3. All my other DAW's work fine at 1920 x 1080.
