Sonar & VEPro5

I've been futzing around with my template, and specifically using VEPro5 with Sonar - some days it feels like I'm making progress, and some days... not so much.

There are so many options!

So if anyone here has a working configuration I could crib from I'd be really grateful - I mean playing with tech is fun, but when it takes time away from producing music it can be frustrating.

My goal is to have one instance each of the 32 bit and 64 bit servers running on the same machine as Sonar Platinum X64. In fact I may be able to ditch the 32 bit server, but for now let's assume I need it.

I wish to have numerous instances of Kontakt 5, and a handful of instances of Vienna Instrument Pro ready to go. I'd like to have all the instruments I use regularly loaded, but purged, since I seldom use all of them at once.

And I'd like to have track templates - I think - for various instruments. At least this is the approach I'm taking at the moment. So for example if I wish to use Cinematic String 2 or Addagietto I'd just load the track template and have the required MIDI and audio tracks ready to go.

Am I making sense?

Any advice? Is there a better way?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Check my post here as a start: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Vienna-Ensemble-Pro-5-with-Sonar-m3316770.aspx and see if that helps.

In VE Pro Ensemble 5 you can set up multiple instances so you could have a 32 bit instance and a 64 bit instance. They can be connected to separately from Sonar. You can also Preserve and Decouple instances and you can save your configuration as "Metaframes".

So you could save your different setups in VEP Ensemble as Metaframes and load them up when you want to add them to a Sonar project. If you save the metaframe with your Kontakt instruments purged I assume they will load that way when you next load the metaframe.

What it sounds like you want to do is to have everything configured in Sonar as track templates have VEP automatically load the proper instruments. That is not possible since the two are completely separate, if I understand your question correctly.

Briefly, here's the way I work (check the link to the previous post above):
  1. I have a Sonar template with all the tracks configured for full orchestra. These are midi tracks and point to an instance of VEP.
  2. There is one instrument track in Sonar which receives the stereo output from VEP. I do the audio mixing and effects routing inside VEP.
  3. I have a Metaframe for VEP that configures all the instruments used by the Sonar template.
  4. When I start a new project I load the template in Sonar, which then fires up VEP.
  5. I load the metaframe and I am ready to go.
My metaframe has most instruments preloaded but they don't have to be. Most VEP instruments are EW Hollywood Orchestra but I do leave some Kontakt instances empty so I can choose percussion instruments - but the routing from the tracks in Sonar is preconfigured. For example I have a Perc 1 midi track in Sonar that routes to a Perc 1 Kontakt "track" in VEP that has no instruments loaded. I've also recently created a separate metaframe and Sonar template for Albion One.

There's a good video on Groove 3.com with detailed info on VEP Ensemble 5.

Hope some of this helps!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for a great answer, or answers...

It would appear that my goal my be a little bit more than the tools can do, which is good to know!

I'm on the fence about mixing in VEPro vs Sonar - going to have to consider that I guess.

I am currently going through the Groove3 video, and I'm going to watch yours next!

Thanks again - a lot of information to consider!!

Hi Bill -

You can have VEP output to multiple channels and then mix in Sonar. That was my original method but for my use, it works better to mix in VEP.

Have fun!
