Sonar and SSD [SOLVED]
I just picked up a 256gb SSD to install in my new(to me) mid tower, and I would like to put ALL Sonar on that drive, even the program. Just checking to see the easiest/quickest way to do this. I can reinstall everything Sonar(CC), move everything Sonar, clone everything Sonar. My current installation happened Saturday night so no biggie.... Thanks for any input. I wasn't sure if this should go somewhere else, but it seemed to be the place.....

I just used my SSD for orchestral libraries, so it was just drag and drop. I'll be interested to hear the best thoughts on how to migrate everything.

I am using 198 gb on my 1tb drive, so I don't want to clone whole drive. I would like the export to take less time. I could then leave my 50gb of music on the hd. That would leave me with around 100gb free on the SSD. Not sure I like that idea.

If you don't mind leaving the Sonar exe on the mechanical drive, most everything else's paths can be changed in 'refs. If you want to move the exe, reinstall is the simple way to go IMHO.

You may want to check into INTEL Smart Response Technologies (SRT). If i remember correctly, it is a part of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software. It basically uses the SSD to cache frequently used programs and data to the SSD without having to reinstall the complete OS from scratch. I'm not sure if it can use the entire 256 GB for this. However, the drive could be partitioned with a certain amount used for SRT and the other partition for frequently used data storage. I bring this up, because i just recently researched options for installing a SSD into an older MB without SATA III ports. Good Luck!

In order to keep costs down, ny used mid tower is a 1st gen i5. I had been on an i3 latptop so quite an improvement for me. The Intel thingy needs 2nd gen or newer.

Easiest way to move any Windows application beyond very simple self-contained ones that don't put things in the registry etc. is to uninstall and reinstall.
Otherwise as a minimum you need to go through the registry amending every entry to do with that software and its hangers-on and dependencies, and relevant contents in the (hidden) c:/programme data folder and some of the stuff in hidden folders in your user directory might need moving or otherwise adjusting as well. Windows basically expects applications to be in certain locations, and moving them once installed is much more complicated than simply installing them elsewhere. Even then putting 64 bit applications where Windows expects 32 bit ones can cause problems.
Even if Sonar itself is moved it will still be accessing the C drive programs data etc. Some of the plugins also have data (e.g. samples) on the C drive and will be accessing it from there.
If you have a single SSD I'd suggest reinstaiiling from scratch and putting Windows and all applications on it. That will give you the biggest speed boost regarding loading applications etc. Unless you use huge sample libraries you can probably get away with putting samples on it as well so long as you don't also use that SSD as the audio spooling drive. SSDs are fast and have very low random access times so don't tend to cause the disk thrashing that having Windows apps and samples on the same drive does with HDDs.

Ok, I got my stuff down to 116 gb and cloned it to the SSD. Then I had to disable the HD in the bios so it won't boot to it. It still shows up in Windows and I can R/W to it. Amazing difference with Windows after initial splash, which stays about the same it seems. It cut project loading time by 2/3, and I am not using AHC1. For some reason Windows crashes when loading with AHC1. I updated to the latest bios and still have the issue so I am in IDE Enhanced mode instead. With 120gb free on the SSD and 900 free on the 1TB, I'm in pretty good shape.
