Sonar and iZotope RX = match made in heaven

For those that want detailed denoising, declicking, declipping, and restoration, iZotope RX is awesome!!

For those that don't want to be annoyed as heck trying to use RX with their files and keep track of everything Sonar is an excellent DAW. MUCH better than Pro Tools!

I've found the following workflow SO easy and SO powerful.

First, edit the Registry to add RX to Sonar's Tools menu (I've done the same with Melodyne Editor as well.) Scott Garrigus' DigiFreq has a great article on doing this:

http://www.digifreq.com/digifreq/article.asp?ID=2

Second, create new layers so you have a fail-safe if your choices in RX don't yield the desired results.

1. Show Layers
2. Create New Layer
3. CTRL+SHIFT+Drag to copy to new layer
4. Solo the new layer

Third,

1. Select one of the files you want to process and choose Utilities-> iZotope RX in Sonar's menu. This will create a copy of the file you want to work on.
2. Then edit the file in RX and hit Save.
3. Close RX.

When you close RX and return to Sonar it will ask if you want to reload the files that have changed- click "Yes."

Now you have a fully processed file that enables you to use the full Spectral Repair functionality in RX and you don't have to try and manually transfer files back and forth.

My personal favorite for this is when doing live shows with multiple artists. For the output I often have only the songs without any of the talking, MC, etc (client preference) so I chop it into pieces and Apply Trimming. Then I open RX with the first file and set a preset for the Denoiser. I then close RX, select all the files that this setting should work on, and go through the process above. What's great is that RX is multi-threaded, so you can use all of your processors at once or open multiple copies and run them at the same time. You can also use Batch Processing, which I haven't quite figured out how to do in this workflow. You can also use RX in realtime as a plugin, but if you need to do detailed edits for clipping, clicks, crackles, or unwanted noises, this is the best way to work. :-)

Just be sure to set the right audio device preferences:

1. In RX, Edit -> Preferences, Audio tab, check the box to release the Audio Device when not in use.
2. In Sonar, Edit-> Preferences-> Audio->Playback and Recording, check the box to Share Drivers with Other Programs.

Peace,
