Sonar cannot open project files in some scenarios.
Hello I'm wondering if anybody can reproduce this please? Thanks ---> On an account with default user permissions... UAC is ON.Before you launch Sonar, right click on the Sonar icon.Click "Run as administrator".UAC pops up, click YES. Sonar is now running without a project. Open Windows Explorer. Double Click on a Project File EXPECTEDProject opens in Sonar ACTUALProject does not open in Sonar. SECOND METHOD Exactly the same as the first, but rather than double click in explorer, drag the project file from Explorer to the Sonar Window (MAC style). EXPECTEDProject opens in Sonar. ACTUALProject does not open in Sonar. PLEASE NOTEThe weird thing is once or twice I have got this to work.... Sometimes it looks like it's opening in Sonar, it seems to begin opening the file, then it bombs out. (and BTW Yes I know there are other ways of opening up Projects  ). ( EDIT: Added the Administrator step, second EDIT clarified the Administrator steps).

Thanks, but when you follow my steps exactly (without the extra steps you state) are you are saying you don't get the same problem? (with both scenarios) in X3D? Much appreciated....

Yes, normally launching projects from Explorer is not a problem. And it shouldn't make a difference, but for the record I have Single-click to open an item set in folder options.

Method 1 (double click a project in windows explorer with X3d open) works fine as long as no dialog box is open in X3d (including the quick start dialog).
Method 2 (drag and drop from windows explorer to X3d when already open) does not work.

I just tried to open a project in X3D via the explorer and with a double click and it opened fine in Sonar.
I wonder if you have Sonar X3 set as the default program to open cwp files?

So the issue is that at the time I was running Sonar as administrator, it works if you don't do this (just like the wav drag and drop issue). Previous issue was withdrawn as unreproducable because I missed out this step.

During the years I remember reading several posts about not being able to open projects via the browser. I can't recall ever reading about the cause nor solution.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

If you have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Sonar installed, it's worth remembering that the default file association will be with only one of them and sometimes it's the wrong one.

I just turn my computer on and click the icon. Like this is going on 3 years now.
I understand installing as Admin, but I've never heard of anyone bothering to open software that way? Is this a version of Window 7 issue? I have used Ultimate, Pro and right now I'm visiting family and using Home Premium.

Maybe not everybody needs to run Sonar as Admin; it depends which plugins you are using. SampleTank seems to require it.

People often open as admin in order to resolve plugin issues (often where software saves settings to the wrong area of the registry where the permissions are different). I avoid this nowadays. Nevertheless the bug is documented. Cheers.

Yes, I have it default to that but also checked again for you. What I may have done with this was way back when someone had asked about the icons being "X1" so I have modified the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->Applications->SONARPDR.exe->shell->open->command to specifically point to X3 from this post.

If you have an administrator authority on your userid, why would you want to run as an administrator?
I ran SONAR as an admin, dragged open without issue and clicking in explorer opened without issue as well.

There you go, that confirms user permissions changes the behaviour (as it should).
I'm not really interested in the whys (people have different ways of doing different things for different reason), I'm just looking at reproducible bugs.
BTW if you run with my user permissions, you can run Wordpad as administrator, and then docs can be double clicked and dragged (and it will work). Sonar does not exhibit this correct behaviour (see steps #1), and has now been confirmed by multiple users (plus is reproducible by Cakewalk).
Anyway the issue is trivial.

p.s. I avoid administrator authority as much as possible when running apps as it keeps my system more secure. Same with user accounts.

I ran SONAR as an admin, dragged open without issue and clicking in explorer opened without issue as well.
An Administrator user account is NOT the same privileges for program execution as Run As Administrator. Run As Administrator grants a higher execution privilege permission level than an Administrative user. Bob Bone

Quite true... The user account that you create (or assign) as an administrator is not a true administrator account. It is a standard user account with administrator privileges. UAC triggers the true admin permissions for the user. If you are bonkers enough you could assign yourself to this true admin account (it's hidden somewhere I think), or turn off UAC. Cheers...
