Sonar doesn't see my MIDI output device

Longtime Cakewalk (PA9) user, finally upgraded to Sonar (v4), so this is a newbie issue. In Cakewalk PA9, I have the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth listed under MIDI Devices (for output) in Cakewalk. All audio and MIDI tracks playback properly when using Cakewalk.

However, my newly installed copy of Sonar 4 doesn't recognize the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth as a MIDI output device, it only shows "MIDI Mapper" in this list, but this choice is not selectable. Consequently Sonar believes I have no MIDI output device and I get no output when playing back MIDI tracks inside Sonar (though audio tracks do play). How do I get this MIDI device to be recognized?

Thanks!

Try selecting the MME drivers. Options>Audio>Advanced, Driver Mode. HTH.

On edit: The TTS-1 that's included with S4 is much better than the GS Wavetable SW Synth. Check out Tutorial 8 on page 100 of the S4 manual.

Switching to MME is generally considered undesireable, if your soundcard is capable of WDM or ASIO.

The MS Wavetable synth is pretty low quality and has lots of latency - you may want to try using a softsynth instead, unless the sound you're going for "cheesy". Try taking Tutorial 8.

The MS Wavetable is also available in ASIO mode, but I never use it.
