Sonar for Live Control

I've been jamming occasionally with another guitar player and his wife who sings and have been thinking of creating some backing tracks for us. I'd like to be able to set up VERSE, CHORUS, BRIDGE, etc and be able, within the rhythmic cycle, to loop and switch between sections using a MIDI pedal (a Behringer FCB1010) so we don't have to stick to a strict structure. The consensus I've been getting is to buy Ableton Live and I'm sure from what I've read that's probably the perfect tool but it also does so much more than what I need and it's one more tool to buy and learn.  Sonar (8.5 and X2) is the tool I have and know best though I've never really attempted live control of looping and playback. I know I can easily turn looping on and off but don't know how I can give a command that signals "when the end of this section is reached, go to section x". Is that possible in Sonar or am I wasting my time trying?

Right now, this is all just for fun...
