Sonar for iPad?

Hi all,

Just a thought here. I finally broke down and bought an iPad. I must say I am very impressed so far. Ironically, I bought a $700.00-something device to use a $5.00 app: Garage Band.  I'm not a mac user so I've never used the full-blown version of GB, but the iPad app is awesome.  The only drawback is you can't export your tracks in midi format.  (yes, there are other things lacking but this IS a $5.00 app running on a mobile device afterall). The user world is screaming for the midi format so maybe that will come in time.  So, what would be really cool is a similar app from CW! And, let it export in midi or at least save as a CW bundle so you can import it into Sonar as a project.  (GB exports tracks as MP4 which Sonar doesn't read. You have to convert it to a wav or an mp3 to get it in but that's really not too big a deal.)

Thoughts anyone, especially any CW developers out there

iPad Garageband is great for sketching out ideas in. It would be good to have a few more advanced features though. Piano roll editor is the thing it needs most badly.

Not sure I want Sonar on IPAd, but I wouldn't mind a Midi Controler app that would control and get meter feedback and such like, from Sonar over the wifi or usb.

It would be nice to have an app that would control any selected Pro Channels. Say you have 40 tracks and you want to tweak the PC in tracks 2 12 20 27 30 and 40. It would be nice to be able to add the PC and track strip from just those tracks to the i-pad screen... (or a hardware controller that can connect to a VS-100, VS-700, or Octa and select any of the PCs to control... just a hardware version of a PC... I would buy that). I might consider an i-pad if I could control selected PCs on it.

There is an app that apes the old 4-track cassette porta-studio but from what reviews i've seen it isn't so hot but for the price I would buy it if I had an i-pad. There might be a MasterWriter app too, I don't know... but I do know that MasterWriter is a great program if you write songs and it has a built in recorder for sketches.

    Lance,

I found a page with some android controllers - haven't had time to muck w/ it yet since I've been travelling.  I'll post it if I get the chance.  If I remember right one has to use wifi, midi yoke and who knows what else.  Which is another reason I haven't investigated more - it looks like a PITA.

I got android for the USB instead of wireless - looks like that is a no go.

The other option is a remote desktop such as Splashtop. It mirrors your PC screen on the iPad, so you can have all of Sonar on the ipad screen, or you can pinch-zoom to focus on a small section. There's a keyboard that pops up if needed, cursor keys that can persist on the screen, and left and right clicks are done using short or long touches. You can even swap between monitors if you have two on your PC.

It's set up for working on a LAN, but if you have a gmail account, it can also work at distance over the internet. I've used it for work while traveling, and it is remarkably effective.

    Cheers, Peter.

If you want to export to midi, FL Studio Mobile can do that. It's a bit more expensive, but it's quite good. It is a first version, so some stuff isn't in it (yet), but will be later. (such as sampling).

Cakewalk has been pretty adamant that they will continue to focus on the PC platform only (for Sonar at least).  Not sure about all the reasons, but I'm guessing the iOS/Mac market is already pretty full??

I'd like the ability to import and/or export GarageBand files off of the iPad. The iPad is a neat little portable sketch pad...

    My site i guess;)

To those interested, I have run "Teamviewer" from my netbook, controlling Sonar`s parameters.
Team Viewer is FREE and does an excellent job of remote desktop made easy.
I used a wireless headphone setup to get Audio where ever I was in my home.
There are internet audio streaming apps I have yet to try, my intent was to setup the main DAW at home,
but to stream audio anywhere I was on the road to my netbook or "tablet" PC.
Even though it seems this is in the early stages,
it won`t be long before we all plug into any terminal, and run Sonar ( or any app) remotely.
If you have not discovered TeamViewer yet, I recommend it!

    Great link fella.

You may have just solved how I control sonar when I'm self-recording my vocals in the next room with something wireless, small, light-weight but quite a flexible interface.

    Ta!

Yup, worked for my solo recording needs, quite well.
being mostly a singer, this works great in the vocal booth.
The home wireless network is sweet for this.
    Have fun!

Perhaps so, but Cakewalk can never make Sonar #1 in DAW no matter how good the product, until it is cross platform..

Neyrinck has a nice app that fully controls Sonar.  Expensive but works great.  Are there any apps that record in a format that Sonar understands without converting?  Thanks!
