Sonar keeps wanting to copy settings
Hey all, I'm in the process of setting up my new laptop (Clevo P771DM-G). I installed Sonar and most other options from Command Center. I set some custom folders in the preferences (I keep data on my D drive ). For some reason, the last few times I've started Sonar it always says: "SONAR will now personalize your user setting by copying application data files. This may take a few moments. Click OK to continue or Cancel to abort the personalization." Whatever I click, Sonar seems to boot normally, but I can't really figure out where the notice is coming from and if something is getting reset every time. Does anyone have a clue how I could fix it or even what could be wrong in the first place? By the way I've tried running as Administrator, makes no diff.

The message usually appears once, the first time SONAR is started. If this appears every time, there must be something preventing the process from completing, maybe file or folder with a permissions problem. There is a registry entry triggering the process, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR\Platinum called ForceUACResyncTime. I believe renaming or deleting ForceUACResyncTime will prevent the process from running but you should try to figure out what is preventing the process from completing. Could also try a full personalization, by holding CTRL while opening SONAR, to see if it clears up the problem.

Hi Scook, thanks for your suggestion. I didn't see any difference starting Sonar with holding CTRL. It also didn't clear up anything. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to look for though. Any idea how I can fix permissions? I did copy my DATA disk over from another computer and redirected my Sonar to use those folders for its content.

It didn't run through and re personalize ? you got a pop up window when holding down CNTRL, select yes. let sonar rescan all plug ins and re personalize. It should take a while to do this. every thing ive seen on the net about this message leads to an administrator issue. a UAC problem. do you have multiple log ins on this computer or just you ?

I assume you allowed the full personalization happen when opening SONAR with CTRL. Unfortunately, I have no idea where your system is causing the process to fail. Usually when installing I take all defaults and run SONAR at least once before starting customization.

I did get a pop up about it wanting to personalize. It's the same popup I get when I don't hold CTRL, as per my original post. No matter which option I choose (Yes or Cancel) Sonar boots and runs almost instantly. It's a fast computer though so I don't know if something is going wrong or if it's just fast. VST plugins are scanned, obviously, but they always are in the background. Like I said, running as an Administrator doesn't seem to change anything, so how could it be a UAC issue? I'm genuinely asking, I don't know much about this part of Windows. There's only me on this computer and I am an Administrator.

I wish I could be more help. I do not run SONAR as administrator, the program does not require it.

I never do either, but I did because I also considered a permissions problem. I did let the process "run", though I didn't see a visual indication that anything was happening.

I get exactly the same behaviour on the laptop's I use for livr performance Sander. In my case it sems to be due to an external drive not being connected that was connected when I originally installed Sonar that contained all of my VST instrument data as well as the various Sonar folder locations. Despite the fact that I have changed all of the folder locations back to the C drive, I still get this message at startup if the drive is not present. If I connect the external drive, the message does not appear, even though none of Sonars folder paths are set to the external drive. IIRC this started to happen a few updates back when the Sonar installer stopped offering (greyed out) the option to change install folder locations. In my case dismissing the message has on ill effects, so I will give Scooks suggestion a try. It is a minor annoyance, but it would be nice to see it gone:)

Deleting the uac reference didn't help, but Scooks suggestion did help me find a solution. There were couple of 'legacy' references to the external drive under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software. If you have changed drive letters or removed a drive any stage, give this a try: Run regedit, then locate the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software. Right click on the branch and choose 'find'. In the dialogue box, check 'match whole string only' and type the letter asignment of the previous HDD (in my case it was "N:") There were three references to the old location in the registry. Once I updated those to the new location on C drive the startup issue dissapeared.

I just did a system restore from an acronis image and repeated the process to narrow down the culprit. It was a single directory location that had not migrated. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software. The registry entry is ContentDir. Note that this will also change the directory to which Sonar installers write application content (not you Scook and Sander- pretty sure you both already know that ). Also ensure that the contents of that directory is copied from the old drive to the new location.

I think it may have been the external disk! I was just about to update to say that my problem mysteriously disappeared but upon reading about the external disk I figure that must've been it! I've since installed it inside the laptop so it won't be an issue anymore.

Cool! Happy campers all round. The key in the post above fixed the issue on 2 laptops for me so I am pretty glad you started the thread. It was one of those annoying things that wasn't quite annoying enough to motivate exploration without help and encouragement:) Thanks for the input Scook.
