Sonar on Toshiba Satellite A505 laptop

Hey all,

I have Sonar 3.11 (I know - I'll upgrade when I can) running on both my studio rig and my laptop at home, which is a Toshiba Satellite A505 with Intel i3 and Realtek HD audio. I've taken some projects of just drums that I just recorded with the studio rig in 24/88. I can put them into the laptop and play them fine. But when I try to record a guitar track through the mic input, it sounds all distorted and the levels fluctuate. I don't know too much about it but it seems like the Realtek can playback in 24-bit, but only record in 16-bit. Is that correct or am I missing something? And what would be the workaround? I had Asio4all on the laptop initially but it screwed everything up. Any other options, short of a USB audio interface?

Using onboard sound chips with Sonar and recording isnt recommended.
Get an audio interface/sound card. Preferably a USB audio interface  sound card. As they have the drivers, converters, clocking and 1/4 inputs needed for recording. an onboard sound chip doesn't have those qualities.

A 5 cent sound chip is meant for general window sounds and playback

Hey Cj, I bet you just copy and paste that one..
Why doesn't Sonar have that in big print on the box or somewhere in plain site here at the forum.

Recording Using the little pink Jack will result in very low quality sound.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm refering to using built in sound cards for recording "high quality" audio. It's a plug and play society and most people don't have a clue about the hardware or technology needed. Drivers and codecs are the biggest mystery. I've never seen an onboard sound chip that accepts 24/88 files. Have you?

Johnny, if you would just Open your eyes you would find it. It listed in their audio interface guide. DUH!!!! Right on this web site!!!
Ill quote it for your smart ars
Realtek audio cards are generally provided with your computer.  They are designed for general media playback and, though they will work with Cakewalk software, you would get better performance using a device designed specifically for audio recording.

Johnny, Alittle research before psoting may serve you well (insert smiley face)

Thanks for pointing that out but, I've used this forum for more than 3 years and never read that guide and I guess not very many others do as per at least 6 posts per day of people having this same issue. I'm so glad you have the patients to keep answering, I know I wouldn't.
I say put it in the web header!
Warning, read the Audio Interface guide before you post if you have a realtech or other crappy sound card

I can't find the answers to my questions anywhere.  I have Sonar Home Studio XL 7 and M-Audio Fast Track Pro.  I am using Shure Mics and also M-Audio Oxygen 49 for imputs.

Problem is, I am not getting any sound AT ALL.  I get sound when opening Abelton 5, which came with the M-Audio equipment, so I know the equipment functions correctly.  I want to start using Cakewalk, but am getting extremely frustrated.

    Other important facts:

    Using Toshiba Satellite A505
    Windows Vista SP2 64-bit
    4.00 GB RAM
    2.10 GHz Intel processor
    Standard Issue Sound Card.

I understand what you are saying about an external sound card; any suggestions?  At this point, I am not upgrading from the Toshiba laptop.

    Thanks.

He say's he has an M audio interface.
You should  start your own thread, this is called hijacking. Besides your in the wrong forum, there is a Home studio forum.
    The pat answer is
Make sure you have downloaded the correct drivers.
    Use ASIO mode.
Make sure Sonar has recognized your device by checking in the audio options.
Select the M audio as the input device for the track you are recording.
