Sonar or VS2480

I currently have a Roland VS1680 that I've had for several years with great success. I play mostly jazz and record mostly live, usually acoustic instruments. I want to upgrade and am considering either the Roland VS2480CD or Sonar Producer4. I won't be doing much midi or sequencing. What do you guys recommend for someone like me...If your advice is to go with Sonar (which I suspect it will be) what do you recommend to get started. I'll be recording my own band, mostly Bossa Nova type jazz, and some of my students (I teach guitar) rock bands...I occasionally do some other jazz projects as well. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks-PeteNova

If I was mostly recording live material I would be inclined to go with the dedicated recorder. They're more portable and probably more reliable. With Sonar you'll have to lug around a computer or laptop, and some kind of breakout box for your audio inputs. Sonar is a very stable program, but Windows has its moments and I'd hate to have to reboot or have it hang in the middle of a recording. Now if you want to incorporate MIDI tracks or audio tracks in the performance, then I'd go with Sonar.

Thanks for the advice. When I say "live" I mean in real time not on location. I'll keep my VS1680 for that. I'd be using Sonar in my home studio so I wouldn't be doing any computer lugging. I just won't be doing much, if any, midi sequencing.

I use a 2480 right now. I'm working at integrating it with Sonar through an RPC-1 card. That way, it's the best of both worlds. You might be able to do the same if you have and R-Bus.
