Sonar producer x2,crashes when opening projects, when closing projects, many other problems
Hey guys,I havent posted in a looooong time, but I am so frustrated.I have sonar x2 producer,I have a hp i7 pavilion dv6 64 bit,8GB ram,ua-25ex audio interface (roland/cakewalk)as well as a focusrite 2i2,and a focusrite VRM box,a a-500 pro(roland)and two 5 inch yamahas and a sub.I have been having problems when I open tracks and close tracks for some time, the program freezes and them crashes. It isnt every song and I have not been able to find a common thread.Sometimes when I add or delete plugins(both third party and cakewalk plugins)it crashes as well.I have reinstalled it many times.I have deleted vst folders and reinstalled them.I have ableton 9 as well and it crashes alot as well, but not as often as sonar. I really need some help, has anyone else encountered a similar problem? What can I do?I cannot get any projects done because it so often crashes, then when I restart sonar x2 it cannot find my interface so I have to restart my computer.Sometimes this happens so many times I just turn my computer off and go to bed depressed ,kinda lame I know. I hope I wasn't too vague and if you guys get posts similar to mine a lot please don't get mad at me,I have tried on my own for months and months but alas I am at my wits end. Thank you in advance Stephen Seth

Hi Stephen - You're not alone, although my experience hasn't been as bad as yours, from the sound of it. My troubles started with X2a: 1. If I close a project, then attempt to open a new one, Sonar crashes. Work-ardound: Always quit SONAR before attempting to open a second project. God forbid I need two projects open at once (I have found it useful, periodically). 2. Sometimes, when I open a project, Sonar crashes. I usually have to either log out and log in to Windows, or actually reboot the workstation. So far, "coming in clean" usually means I can open the project. I have no intention of re-installing SONAR - it's much less of a bother for me to follow the work-arounds. Kinda sad, but true.

Hi Stephen, I've had one or two X2 crashes, but that's it. What I can say is I've never had an Ableton Live crash ever. If both are crashing on you, you should look at your OS and hardware health. Maybe you have some drivers that aren't playing well in the sandbox. I would use the Windows Event Viewer and look at the times when crashes occurred and see what error messages are there. That will give you a clue as to what the offending driver, service, or program may be. If you track that down and still need help, at least you will be able to give people some specifics on what the problem is.

If you're having crashes with both Sonar and Ableton, I would suspect that you have an issue with your computer. Run a memory test, disk scan and a full anti-virus and malware scans. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your audio interface. Also, I recommend getting rid of any plug-ins that may be suspect, like freebies and trial versions and some 32-bit plug-ins if you're running 64-bit Sonar and any others that you're not using and are just cluttering up your system.

Sometimes when I open a project in Sonar, It sort of crashes. It says "not responding" but if I give it a bit, it goes ahead and loads up. Rarely does it totally crash. If it does totally crash, I usually turn off my AI and give it a few seconds and then turn it back on before I start Sonar again. Sometimes I have to reboot. The not responding and keeps going happens quite a bit but the crash and burn is not that frequent.

daveny5, I never have tested with Ableton. Unfortunately, I use 32bit plug-ins, but I need them! haha And, a few weeks ago, everything was normal and never crashes. Out of the blue I've noticed a problem when closing projects. And when opening, the problem is indentical with Guitarpima "problem". I have read a lot of stuff talking about that. Some people say it's a Windows problem, others say that is the 32bit plug-ins...I gonna try somethig here!!
Thanks for the answers!

Have you tried opening projects in safe mode? It will help you to find out if a particular plug in is to blame. Also, if a project opens fine in safe mode, try re-saving it under a different name and see then if loads ok in normal start up mode. http://www.cakewalk.com/D...roubleshooting.13.htmlBibs

Hi Stephen, it´s just a guess into the blue, but the scene you describing, like others wrote here, could be a hardware or os problem: 1.: have you tried all USB connectors? sometimes usb connector cable are not strong enough ,broken aso or/and some/all usb ports don´t deliver the whole range avaiable. 2. Is it possible for you to try a fire-wire interface (sure with a firewire express card with TI chip)? good luck

The above is a good call. Try also opening sonar up without a-500 connected if powered by USB

Hello all. I am a long-time lurker, but this is my first post. I've decided to come out of the shadows to states that I too am having these problems. Overall, it is very frustrating. Cakewalk Tech support through the Problem Report is indeed helpful, but so far I am still having issues. My issues in the past were Sonar Producer 64-Bit constantly crashing; with the latest crash before the most recent reinstall of Sonar as the Console Emulator freezing up...as indicated in the Windows Event Viewer. After advice of Cakewalk, I did a complete application, content and registry-key removal, then a complete re installation. This time around, I am using very little 32-bit plugins in my projects, but still use some of the professional and "solid" types out there (i.e. I refrain from using SynthEdit or SynthMaker plugins). My current crash scenario is after about 10 seconds of opening a project and then hitting PLAY. My starting project consisted of two instances of 64-Bit Microtonic and one instance of 32-Bit Synplant. Event view reports "faulted modules of " C:\Windows\system32\mfc110u.dll" and also (a separate crash), "C:\Windows\system32\GDI32.dll." I don't want to give up, but the constant errors and crashing is killing my creativity, which is already hanging by a thread in the first place! Any help is appreciated.

Well, I perhaps found the "workaround fix" to my problem, similar to Stickman393 in his response. After restarting Win7, and opening the project again in Sonar, the project did not crash. This is good! Now...I sleep my computer a lot. Could that perhaps be a problem with Sonar? Perhaps those critical Windows DLL's didn't wake up properly to be used by Sonar?

yes, sleep can be a problem for DAWs. Better to shut down than sleep or at least reboot before using DAW

Have you submitted crash dumps via the problem reporter? If so please list the CWBRN numbers. Often the dump file will shed some light on the cause of the crash.

just remember to unplug any devices before computer goes to sleep and/or plug, replug the devices in once comp has totally woke.

Back to the OP. The UA25EX from Roland/Cakewalk is not a USB 2 device, it a 1.x device. I had issues with mine and gave it to a friend. After I picked up my quad capture things became more stable. THe other issue can be USB port power loading. Each port is designed to deliver 500ma of power. Both my A-500 Pro and quad cap pull 500ma by themselves. I have to make sure each one is on a USB port with no other devices.

+1 for Chuck's not to not let your PC go to sleep with your interface running. That's generally a bad idea, even if your interface can survive it without a crash.

I tried the Windows sleep function years & years ago and it never did work right from the start. I've never tried it since, and just forget about it all together. Also, many advise 'No screensaver' at all - and in the Power Options, it's a good idea to change the settings for 'Monitor Goes To Sleep' and the other one there to 'Never'. These small, simple changes can be enough to make a difference - maybe even be the difference.
