Sonar products differences
Hi there I`m new to sonars products as I`ve been looking for reason and have been on Cubase all the time from the beginning of midi in the goog old days. As there are a lot of sonar versions out there, I could really not get into the differences between home, studio, producer, LE a.s.o. Could one tell me what to purchase as there is sonar 7 home I could get cheep or buy the X`s 1. or 2. versions. Thanks in advance and excuse my bad english as I`m german.

Welcome to the forum! Home Studio has been discontinued for two years already. The options are X2 Essentials, X2 Studio, X2 Producer and Cakewalk Music Creator. As the lisences are not transferrable, the only legit ones for sale now is the X2 series and MC, unless some shop has old stock on the shelves. You don't give any hint of on what level you want to get (what version of Cubase you have?), MC and Essentials are the beginner level products, especially MC, but it still is very capable. LE is the one usually shipped with soundcards, and I don't know if you can buy it at all at the moment.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

I know homestudio is discontinued, but where are the differences, are they marginal or different worlds? You may be wrong, that licenses are not transferable, as this is european law and every owner can do with his own`s what he wants. I`m running a Cubase 5, of course also out of time, but still works and I`ve spent a lot update fees on it. I also had this on reactor by NI, as I started out from the first year updating at high fees to marginal different levels and bugging outs, after this, they tried to charge old customers again, changing the protection policys. Of course I know pioneers feed a lot to the developers success but as in a relationship, if only one side pays it will propably not work for long. What level to get means nothing to me, as the musical level is in mind and with a good or not too god tool beside, the skill is nearly the same. Just spending much time on learning a complicated tool will give frustration and may be returning to the moog or fender again, as I did the last years. For my old days I will come back to "Old school electronic music" like Kratfwerk, Schulze, Vangelis again, as I got input from a fan of my 30years ago vinyl output, who sought after me all around the country searching for another copy of this 30 year old output. This gave me the intention to get back into it and as you see, I`m not into dance, hiphop or whatever like this. I prefer real instruments, as my minimoog, but I`m in need of getting back the one and only sound, a song was created with and those moogs are missing storage sounds. Need to know more?

You can compare the features on CW store/product pages. I remember having seen a feature comparison chart years ago, but I don't remember where. There is, of course a huge difference between, say, MC and X2 Producer. Obviously, the biggest difference are the included soft synths and effects. There's no difference in the actual recording process or in using soft synths and FX. IIRC MC has limited simultaneous track count for recording (2??). I've heard about national laws (Germany in particular) about transferring the licences, but I've never heard anyone being actually able to do it. By "level" I meant are you a professional, hobbyist, serious amateur, beginner, are you an instrumentalist, do you record live drums (needing half a dozen simultaneous tracks recorded etc.) It's very difficult, if not impossible to say what CW product, if any, would be best for you, nor would it be practical to start listing the contents of each version here, as you can do it yourself. If your main activity is recording real instruments, Producer might be overkill, then again, it has the best mastering plugins of the set, in case you don't already own your favourite ones as VST or hardware.

Thanks to both of you, I´ll get into the pdf later. I do not need real drums recording, but voice and guitars. I`m serious hobbyist, maybe, looking for professional results. Yes softsynths are my skills, thats why I`m taking eyes on reason too. Well, I`ll get into the pdf now and maybe know more after.
