I use Sonar only on a laptop. Although I can easily add a second monitor, over time I've become very accustomed to using just the laptop screen.
Shortcut keys are my friend. Just the keystroke D alone is a winner. Several others of course. But these make it easy to see just what you need at the moment you think of them. So a single laptop screen only approach can be and is convenient if you get some of these keyboard shortcuts memorized. There are not that many.
This is probably my favorite shortcut, besides Ctrl+Z
