Sonar5 - SONARPDR.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close.

WinXP Pro SP2 + all post hotfixes per Microsoft Update. Have Sonar4P on the machine and (still) working fine.
Just installed Sonar5P, did not migrate any settings from Sonar4. No error messages from install.

Launched Sonar5, it profiles audio card, gives "tip of the day", then the "SONARPDR.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." box comes up.

I added Sonar5's exe to DEP exclusion (Sonar4's had to have one), but still no joy.

Uninstalled Sonar5 (using 'custom' option and selecting everthing), rebooted, reinstalled Sonar5, no joy. Deleted Sonar5's AUD.ini, tried again to launch. Sonar5 reprofiles audio card, gives "tip of the day" and crashes with the above error.

As mentioned, Sonar4P is on the machine and is still working fine even with Sonar5 installed. Other apps on the machine are working fine as well, no problems encountered.

Any help would be appreciated. I did search this forum, found a few posts with this crash, but didn't see any answers.

Thanks and regards,

I had a same problem. This happened when I have installed some VST plugins. Simply uninstall all VST's and try run S5. Than you must find what VST is problem and use DXi, if you can.

He's more than likely right saying that one or more of your VST plugins is the cause. Wildman

    Thanks very much for replies.

I was just now thinking along those same lines, so I tried running the the VST Adapter Config wizard. I received THIS message:

This application has failed to start because DspfxDw.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

I did try the DspFX demo last year, it expired long ago so I just now de-installed it. The VST Adaper config wizard now runs clean (I selected both options to rescan).

Sonar5 now launches with the default project only briefly visible, then the same crash message.

I'll look at DXi's next, it will be a few hours until I can get back to this. Stay tuned, and thanks.

"SONARPDR.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I have been experiencing this EXACT problem for about a week now. At first I just thought it was a nuisance (just one of those things that randomally occur, I guess), then I began experiencing it much more often. It became so annoying that it would appear not even a minute after launching my project.

So I began troubleshooting. In fact, everything that has been mentioned in this post so far. I too thought it was a problem with a VST plug-in since I run so many different ones but after uninstalling everything (and I mean everything) the stupid thing would still crash! . Then I came upon an unexpected discovery... There seems to be a bug in the "Show Track Layers" function. I realized this when I was doing any editing (to include just about anything, including [alt+sel] highlighting (this is how I found it)) that the program would crash the minute I crossed a track that had the "Show Track Layers" button highlighted. The funny thing though was that it was localized to one set of tracks located in a particular track folder (and not all of them either). Of course this would lead you to believe that it would have to be a plug-in or soft-synth associated with that track folder, but again remember I uninstalled every plug-in and sofy-synth and was still crashing the program.

***Let me also point out that I was able to duplicate this problem on two seperate computers with different driver and plug-in setups***

My solution (which seems to be working so far), was to insert a new MIDI track above each individual suspect one, copy all of the data from the old track and the paste it into the new. I reinstalled all of my plug-ins and haven't crashed since.

Hopefully cakewalk will look into this bug and see if they can fix it.

I had the same problem then after I uninstalled and reinstalled Sonar would launch but any (including Cakewalk and Sonalkis) plugs would not be availibe and S5 would crash.

I removed all my VST plugs and reinstalled and everything seems fine. This was right when S5 came out.

    @Raymond
    Interesting info for your situation.
Since I have never gotten S5 open yet, if the problem is a bug with "Show Track Layers", it is in the default blank project that comes with S5. But I'm not sure that's connected to my issue.

    @Noah330 and others helping here...
I have removed ALL VSTs now. When S5 launches it now asks for my MIDI inputs (haven't gotten that far before now), and then crashes leaving the "MIDI active" icon open in the systray.

Sonar4 still running perfectly here, the only complaint is all the missing plugs when I open a project.

I can't imagine what is on my system that doesn't bother S4, but causes S5 to crash???

I'll keep looking. Keep the ideas coming.

    Thanks,

Much simpler solution..... call Cakewalk Tech Support. that's what it's there for.

I ended up restoring earlier and earlier Ghost images of my OS, until I found one that S5 would install on. It's the one I took *before* installing S4 on it.

I now have S5 installed on that "fresh" WinXP, and have since re-installed all VSTs, DX etc. that I use, plus all my apps that were not already on that image. S5 is working fine, so far.

I'm not thinking S4 is to blame, something that went on my system about the same time as S4 is more the likely. I don't make images at every install, rather I tend to do a batch of things and then take an image.

I sent a bazillion error reports via microsoft on the crashes, I hope the reports are useful to Cake so they can fix this situtation, whatever it was.

    Onward.

I was having this problem as well. I used SysInternals Registry Monitor and I noticed that HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\5.0\ShowQuickStart was the last value accessed in the registry before it started collecting crash report data. I toggled it off and, sure enough, there was no crash. I then manually tried to bring up the Quick Start dialog from the Help menu, and boom: crash. So the problem is the Quick Start dialog, and you can get around it by setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\5.0\ShowQuickStart to 0. This is only a workaround; I'd like to see a real fix.

Here is some more technical information to possibly help Cakewalk address this issue. The stack trace when the crash occurs is sonarpdr.exe:005dda60() -> sonarpdr.exe:0091b817() -> MFC71u.dll!CDialog::DoModal() Line 519 + 0x12 -> MFC71u.dll!CWnd::CreateDlgIndirect(...) I’m gonna bump this from down in the depths of the forum and state what I have found.....

I've been experiencing the same problem... did all the suggestions that were here and in another thread....but to no avail....

Sonar 5...I've deleted the aud.ini a number of times.... it worked a few times but now sonar 5 crashes every time.

I've found that If I turn off my tascam-1884 and run sonar5 it doesn’t crash....if I have the tascam on it crashes every time, now..
This is very frustrating, as you can tell....

Sonar 4.04 works fine...no problems whatsoever...

This is the error message that I get:
    AppName: sonarpdr.exe AppVer: 14.0.0.171 ModName: msvcr71.dll
    ModVer: 7.10.3052.4 Offset: 00010440

There’s more info to be had but that’s pages and pages long...

Can someone from cake chime in here?

If not I will be contacting support tomorrow...I usually like to figure these things out for myself before I contact support because most problems are user error. I guess that’s what I should have done, but, well, you know...

I harbor no ill will towards any man.

I had problems with SONARPDR.EXE regularly causing total freezes with (only) one of my projects. It turned out to be an old DX-version of PSP Audioware's Nitro plugin. Newer versions and (I think) all VST-versions of Nitro don't suffer from this.

Just an example of how much trouble a bad plugin can cause, and it took me hours to find the cause!

Edit: Now that I read your recent posts more thoroughly, I see that it's probably related to your Tascam-1884. So my advice isn't probably useful for this. Good luck, anyway!

    Some updated info.

I just installed S5PE, plus patched it with 5.0.1 patch, on XP PRO SP2 machine that has not previously had any version of Sonar installed.

S5PE won't come all the way up on this machine, either. Crashes with the same error message as the other machine, same offset address in SONARPDR.EXE.

After copying a valid S5 project to this new machine, I tried double-clicking the project's .cwp file from Windows Explorer. S5 launches fully! I was able to visit options and select midi in/out, set project and global options, etc. Still won't launch without a filename to open, though.

    1. I don't have any VST's (didn't even install PerfectSpace from Sonar DVD), but ran the VST Adapter anyway, no VST's found.
    2. I unchecked option run VST adapter at startup.
    3. I unchecked option to use normal template at startup. I didn't install any templates, so Normal.cwt is the only one in the sonar directory anyway.

What happens differently, when S5 launches without a file to open?

At least I found out I can use S5 while trying to solve this problem.

Still open to ideas to solve this one, thanks,

    I FOUND IT!!!!

It is the "quick start wizard" that causes the CRASH on my systems (the dialog box that prompts to create a new project, open recent project, etc.) This dialog DOES NOT RUN if launching Sonar to open an existing project file.

This dialog can be run from within Sonar by selecting "quick start" from the Help menu.

If anyone else is experiencing Sonar CRASH when launching it without a project file to open, and it has never reached this dialog prompt before crashing, this might be your issue as well.

Try double-clicking a project file from Windows Explorer, it should launch Sonar and also open the file. If the Quick Start dialog is your problem, Sonar will come up and work fine in this mode.

Off to give Cake a problem report.
