Sonar8, no audio..

Just upgraded my OS from Vista to 7 and subsequently had to reinstall Sonar 8. Now I remember the last time I installed sonar 8 on this same computer(two years ago!) it took me about a week and hours of researching online forums to get playback sound with a clever trick, but somehow this time I can't retrace what I did and have no audio. Yep, today is the tenth day and the sonar is silent.
I have exhausted all of the input/output options under both audio and midi devices,
I can record and the blue dB meter clearly registers the midi signal from oxygen8 and oxygen49 and records it, but I can't hear a thing, can't even audition loops.
I have Acidpro 7 working and the regular windows media player can play the sounds of Bourne Supremacy in the background while I'm staring dumbfounded at the sonar platform and trying to figure is it I who got dumber from two years ago or the Sonar/windows combo.

Any help or simple words of kindness are absolutely appreciated.

Computer: amd athlon64X2, windows 7 ultimate, 2 gig, 512 gig
Audio: HD audio headphone [wavert]
           HD audio SPDIF out [wavert]

Most likely you need to change the driver mode in Sonar under Options/Audio/Advanced tab. Not sure what your sound card supports but either ASIO or WDM is the best driver choice. If your sound card does not support either of these driver modes you will need to use MME. MME will work with motherboard sound chips. Then under Options/Audio/Drivers tab make sure your sound card is selected for both input and output.

EDIT:
I still use Windows XP and Sonar 7 so I'm not familiar with Wavert driver. Perhaps that is an option now in Sonar 8 and Windows 7?

Thanks for your response. I had lo let vista share drivers with sonar to let it use them but these settings are different in windows7. Here are a series of pics showing the audio and midi options:

Well, using the built-in Realtek soundcard is your main problem. You won't get good results using that. However, if you insist, I suggest the following:
Uncheck the S/PDIF output since you're probably not using it. (Requires a fiber optic cable.)
Click on the Realtek HD Audio manager in your system tray and make sure the proper ins and outs are selected.

If you want to get decent results, you need to get a better audio interface.

Thank you Dave for your response.
I unchecked the SPDIF, but I can't find Realtek in system tray or anywhere else on the computer.
I can access some ins and outs through control panel/sound.

It is set to hd mic.

I see your point about better interface, do you think if I'd go with a USB device I'd still need a soundcard?

Thanks,
P

no, a "usb audio device" is the same thing as a soundcard, it's just external instead of internal.  and you don't use 2 soundcards at the same time.  check out my website for more info and some recommendations.

in the meantime, try downloading and installing ASIO4ALL (google it) and then change the driver mode in Sonar to ASIO.

Payam,
If you go with a USB audio interface, you won't need a soundcard as that will replace your internal soundcard.
Depending on your budget and how many audio/midi In/outs you need, you could/should get something that Cakewalk supports:  http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/By-Category.aspx/Cakewalk-Hardware. There are many other vendors with good audio/midi interfaces that you should research also.

Before buying a new interface, you can post a thread in the Computers forum with all you specs and hardware you're planning on installing.......they should be able to give you some good advice as well.

Good luck!!
