My first thought was that it didn't appear to do anything different than a Mackie Control. But after watching the videos.... I have a Mackie Control + 1 Extender for sale!! :) Just wish I could continue using my MOTU 896HD. What about other software support? I wonder if this has Mackie Emulation or if it's totally locked down. In that case, I'll stick with my Mackie's.

hmm.. Its very easy to get GAS over this.. The WOW factor is certainly there.. But seriously.. Its not something that you cant have with a good interface, a couple of Behringer controllers, and Sonar 8.

This is waaay more than I need. Let's just hope this is not the first move toward making Sonar the dedicated proprietary operating system for Roland hardware.

I saw about $4000 street price in the press release. That would be for the whole thing. I wonder if they will offering this as parts of the whole as well. The control surface is really the part I would want. I already have all the rest of the stuff, including Sonar, synths, audio interface, etc. Unfornately, just about everyting in the package is new and doesn't have component prices out there yet, except for Sonar itself. It seems like about a $600 audio interface in terms of comparing to others out there at rough glance. I'd guess that the Fantom VS thing is in line with their Fantom Rack - assuming that the sound cration and processing is REALLY taking place on the hardware not the CPU (cue line6 devices like the UX2, which I love, but wouldn't want a synth to work like this - then it may as well be a VSTi), so let's assume that may knock off another $1400 or so. Sonar 8 Producer is another $619 (new) Rapture is another $200 Using $4000 as the starting point, that would leave about $1200. Of course, that's pretty much what you would pay for a Mackie Control, $1500 for a Euphonix (which of course is onle Mac anyway, but...), about $1200 for a Digidesign Command|8, etc. If my guesses are anywhere close, and they offer the product as a seperate item, I think that we would be able to expect the level of quality in all of the above-mentioned control surfaces + the added benefit of true integration. It'll be interesting (for me) to see where this goes. I'm very glad to see that they are using Sonar as the heart of this system, as that indicates Roland's interest in continuing the line. Here's another review I saw: http://createdigitalmusic.com/

Here's another review I saw: http://createdigitalmusic.com/ That is a pretty good cost break down Blades. Maybe Cakewalk have plans along the lines you suggested. It might make sense for a large number of Sonar users. Thanks for the Createdigital link.

As someone who has been wanting a control surface for some time, and patiently awaiting the Euphonix Artist Series to start supporting Windows, this is pretty exciting for me. I do, however, have some concerns/questions: 1. Interface: I already have a pretty nice interface (Mackie Onyx 400f) that has very useable preamps. I'm curious as to the quality of the AD/DA and the preamps on this interface. Maybe I'm just a skeptic, but I somehow doubt the quality of those mic preamps would surpass what I already have. I would rather them offer the control surface by itself as an option. Maybe in the future?? 2. Expandability: Ideally, I'd like to have 24 faders. With the MCU or the Euphonix, you can expand to the number that you'd like. I don't see any mention of expandability on any of the announcements or on the dedicated website. It sure would be nice to be able to expand in multiples of 8 or 16 faders. Again, maybe a future planned product? I can't see the back panel of the control surface in any pics anywhere, so it's hard to tell if there are connections that could be for this purpose. I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone else mention this. Those two items withstanding, I really like what I see. $4000 doesn't seem out of line for what you're getting. I'm just hoping they'll offer a more modular approach some time in the future for people who don't really want the Interface, the Fantom and who already own Sonar 8. Dan

Here's another review I saw: http://createdigitalmusic.com/ OK, this makes sense....somewhat. I am curious regarding connectivity between these separate components. I see that the control surface "connects" to the I/O part and the I/O connects to the PC via USB. Has anyone figured out what the connector between the control surface and the I/O actually is? If it's USB then great. These could most likely be used separately. If it's some kind of propriatary connector that would not be good. I am looking at the 360 view of the control surface but can't quite make out the connectors. Just a thought. Brian
