Sonaresl.exe has stopped working trying to open X2

Can anyone help with the error message "Sonaresl.exe has stopped working" on a new install and program opens and tries to run Wave Profiler for the first time? I am getting kicked out every time. I have a working install on my laptop, but it won't open on my desktop installation. Thanks, Carl Windows 7 64.

Wild guess, are you running as administrator?

Latest sound card drivers and firmware? You might need to go into Sonars safe mode otherwise.

Just for shnitzes and giggles delete the aud.ini file. Go to your C drive, click on the Users folder, open the folder with your user name on it. Then go to the AppData folder, open the Roaming folder. In that you should find a Cakewalk folder. In there will be SONAR folder, open that and delete/and or rename the aud file. BTW You must make sure you can see hidden system folders to do this. That can be done in Control Panle under Folder Options. BTW part II, not saying this will solve your problem, but it can't hurt

Here is the one result that came back from a Google search on that precise error message:

I did everything to re-install and it did not help. X2 starts to load then the screen "We must now perform a series of tests to determine the timing characteristics of your Windows hardware". When I click "Yes" it starts the Wave Profiler, but hangs with "Analyzing: Litexmedia Virtual Audio Cable (WDM) (45 in, 45 out) Profiling... ===LitexMedia Virtual Audio Cable (WDM) (45 in, 45 out) 11025 Hz:

I would suggest you temporarily remove that VAC program from the equation.  I do not actually understand why you would want to use that in Sonar - not that you couldn't - I just do not see why one would.

It seems to be a file streaming application to move wav files and such from one program to another, with stream mix capabilities.  (From my very brief read of something online for this).

So anyways - can you temporarily remove that Virtual Audio Cable software and then fire up Sonar's wave profiler?

    Yes, running as Administrator.

Just to clarify, that means you still need to right click on the exe file and select Run As Administrator, even if you are logged on as administrator.

I'm going to second what Bob said. I have Loop-B-MIDI installed so I can use Drumagog to generate MIDI notes in certain projects. However it causes all kinds of issues with some of my other plug-ins so I keep it disabled unless I'm doing Drumagog stuff. Not saying this is related to your issues, but try Bob's idea. Or better yet, disable all your audio devices temporarily and see if SONAR will at least open.

Robert_e_bone, Thanks for the tip. There were 8 instances of the VAC in the Device Manager. I deleted all but one and disabled that one. Everything seems to be running fine. Thanks you everyone for your responses. What a great help and resource. Carl

Glad you are past that error - now let's better understand what was going on underneath it all.

Can you please explain a bit as to what you are using this VAC for on your system?
