Song Remains the Same
It's been a longly longly longly time... Since I last saw it at a midnight movie some place. I clicked play on Netflix and sat back and pretended it was a live show.... wow those guys were hot. I know about all the editing re: http://www.thegardentapes.co.uk/ But honestly just watching the movie got me in a rocking mood.... what can I say? Rock on. I wish bapu and my olpal had been here... a few of you other folks as well. :-)

Yeah, even with all the editing... the sound you hear is still only coming from 3 instruments and a voice at any given time. Wicked.

That may be what I'm watching, again this morning, on NetFlix. It definitely sounds better than I remember it sounding. :-)

you'll dig it. this is the one: besides all the years of concert footage, there are some awesome extras: For the DVD, Page collaborated with music producer Kevin Shirley, with whom Page worked when he was performing with The Black Crowes. Shirley recalled: I produced the Black Crowes, and Jimmy joined them for a run of live dates in 1999. I saw the show in New York, and then I went to California and recorded the shows, took the tapes away, and fixed them up a little and mixed them. I did Live at the Greek without any input from anyone, as it wasn't originally going to be an official release. But I think everyone was impressed with it; certainly Jimmy said he was. Then, when Jimmy decided to do a new [Led Zeppelin] DVD, he started looking for someone familiar with the modern applications necessary for surround sound mixing. If you listen to the Royal Albert Hall [concert] opening in 5.1, you can see Jimmy had this audio concept really early on of giving people a sense of the band going onstage and the audience swells around you. We had a meeting to discuss the requirements needed for the DVD project audio, and afterward, he asked if I would be interested in ‘helping’ him.[3] Page, with Shirley and the producer and creative director Dick Carruthers, worked for the best part of a year to research, compile, load, mix and present the material. [2] Much of the footage which was included on the DVD was painstakingly restored for several months, before being mixed at Sarm West Studios in London. In all, 132 cans of film and two sets of two-inch video tape were examined for the project. [4] Some of the video tapes suffered from a common fault called 'Sticky Shed Syndrome' where the bonding agent holding the magnetic particles to the tape backing decomposes to the point where the oxide is scraped off during playback. The tapes consequently had to be restored by baking them in ovens at 55°C (131°F) for three weeks in order for them to be played back. [4]The audio portions were digitally remixed for stereo and 5.1 surround mixes. Upon its release the DVD received excellent reviews. Michael Azerrad of Rolling Stone magazine gave the DVD four stars, describing it as the "Holy Grail of heavy metal" and "one of the best rock documentaries ever made." [7] As of November 2007, the DVD has had an overwhelmingly positive number of reviews on website Amazon, with 560 out of 618 reviewers giving it five stars, [8] and on the Internet Movie Database with an average score of 9.4/10. I've seen that show several times, excellent concert. Another good concert is Alice Cooper's Welcome to my Nightmare... that one is pretty much the straight up show.... but well done. Hey... for kicks, when you watch the Zep show.... this is pretty cool... and I have discussed this before.... but anyway... record the music to Stairway to Heaven when they perform it on the stage in the show. In the part about the bustle in the hedgerow, use your DAW to reverse it.... That is the part where everyone said it was backward masked in the studio.... well, you are recording from a LIVE show,,, so listen to see if you can hear Satan my Sweet Satan in there..... remember it's live, not a studio recording.... unless you believe that ZEP took that video into the studio and added the backward masking in that one song just to remain consistent for the conspiracy folks....

mike_mccue Yeah, even with all the editing... the sound you hear is still only coming from 3 instruments and a voice at any given time. Wicked. Not always. They also sometimes used background/additional material they played back from a open reel tape recorder positioned visibly on the stage.

This comes a little late, but I didn't notice you'd asked for an explanation. This happened in the Helsinki Concert in late 60's, but of course it was done in lot of concerts. The guys brought an open-reel tape recorder in the middle of the stage, and explained that because there's only three of them instrumentalists, they can't produce all the sounds they want, so they use pre-recorded material. However, they want t be open and play fair, and show it to the public. They only used it in one song, IIRC, but I don't remember which one. Afterwards I've sometimes wondered if my poor english played tricks. What if they used it as an effect and I misunderstood the explanation?? They've surely done that thing in dozens of concerts. Maybe someone can set me straight??

bapu I saw James Taylor on Saturday Night Live (back in the 70's) use a tape recorder for BGV. Back in the day, it was the only way to get the good backing tracks live. In high school, I played for a choir who supplemented their band with a tape deck so they could have the strings they wanted. I hated that thing.
