Song about a cadillac
It's been a while since I wrote anything new so I figured I needed to have some fun..... so I set about messing around and came up with this. It's about a car.... or is it? https://app.box.com/s/8zwr48mczf1isj64tnwu I call it the Caddy Song for lack of a better name. I tried to keep it simple..... bass, drums, guitars.... I'm playing the guitars.... harmonic picking, slide, etc..... It's my first recorded public foray into the realm of slide guitar.... Guitar is my Tele, into the studio boogie, cranked and mic'd. The bass is me, on midi keys with the Sound center ricko sample. Drums are BiaB... there are some low level rhythm guitars from BB low in the mix. I also used some fx in this.... obvious isn't it? A bit out of my normal country genre, but back in the day I played in a 3 piece band and we rocked pretty heavy..... So.... thoughts, opinions, comments...all appreciated. updated link to new version: https://app.box.com/s/50685827cd6sbcwrl4uj

I saw your website and realized that we have/had the same amp. I had that same Mesa Boogie amp. Loved that thing - and sold it like a dumb ass. Yours sounds awesome. The vocal was a bit too far away for me. But I like the gritty, thoroughgood feel to it. I'd intro with that slide guitar though! :) Personally I thought it was good. Right at the 11 second mark...I'd do the same lick on the slide as you do at the break. Good to meet another pinch harmonic guy... :)

Herb, this is a cool song! I, too, would like to hear the vocal more up front and in your face, but the performance is fabulous. You did a very good job on the slide guitar, much better than I've been able to achieve. Good to hear from you again.

Herb, Cool song and performance. On the vox, I would add some Billy Gibbons'ish vocal treatments. A little pitch shifting effect would bring the vox to the forefront a little more. Sounds great though. Regards

cool song. you might want to put that lead guitar off to one side, it seems to be sitting right on top of the vocals in the middle during the verses. If it was panned right at bit it would open up the vox and let the great playing stick out a bit too.

I can't hear the vocals well enough Herb. But this song was a pallet for which you to paint with your guitars :-) (it does need more cowbell) Good job! H- (just about ready to lay down that mandolin track.)

#19..... more cowbell and mando... got it... Where's that Walken guy when you need him? Malta.... and the prize goes to.... you nailed it.... that's a Harley exhaust not a souped up caddy. I couldn't find a decent sounding muscle car engine starting...... so I doubled the Harley with 2 similar but different clips.... Glad you both commented.

Oh yeah, you are channeling ZZ for sure! This sounds great Herb, though I agree with the comments on bringing the vocals up. Maybe even using Doubler or Microshift on them to get that ZZ Top effect. Update: Just heard the updated version. Vocal is louder, but I still think my comment about Doubler or Microshift is good. Like the new FX as well. Great job all around Herb! Regards, Dan

Dan... thanks. This was one of those songs that almost didn't happen for a number of reasons. I didn't like the structure and chord/keys changes in the first one.... scrapped it and reworked from the ground up..... the next was too this or too that..... I've had this as a back burner project for several months.... I think I'm doe with it for now.... thanks for the suggestions.... I may pull it out again when there's nothing to do and mess around again......

The Pogue: Yeah... It took a bit of practice to get the slide right..... low string action doesn't equate to easy slide playing.... I think if you listen you can hear some fret noise in there.

Cool tune.... As already mentioned it definitely has a ZZ vibe to it. Billy would approve. I agree with Dan that Microshift (or similar) on the vocals would probably work nicely, but I would also cut back on the delay a little to better fit into the music (which sounds good).

Great, Herb! A bit off your beaten track and I think it's just great. Yeah, you have to hear the Gibbons/Rhodes influences but it's obvious Herb is doing it. Now, I might not have known it if I just heard it on the radio. It's a good move for you Herb and actually has a bit fuller sound than many of your country mixes, imho. This is a lot of fun and very easy to listen to. Slide rocks! Not to be confused with our Oak Creek Canyon "Slide Rock". Nice hearing a Herb tune!

Loved it Herb. Good to hear another one from you! I think the words have two meanings maybe ;).....My Rolls Royce might not like me looking at the Cadillac. The guitar tones are top notch. The whole composition is a keeper and ready for prime time. I do agree though that the vocals weren't coming out as much as I would like. I'm not sure it's as much a volume issue as it might be an issue with reverb/delay/EQ. I can't really say. Maybe a db or two upwards wouldn't hurt. Very subjective call JMO. I think the vox and guitar are competing for interest at different places but the guitar seems to be winning overall.

I certainly appreciate the kind words..... every now and then I get lucky I guess. Warren.... good to see you around these parts. and thanks for listening. Tim..... Yes, the words could very well have two meanings. It was intentionally written that way. Is it about a car or a girl? That caddy sure is a looker.....

Always a pleasure Herb and even more interesting when you step outside your country box. I enjoyed the playing on this it sounded well arranged and captured with a well sounding mix here. Anyone who thought that sound was anything but a Harley needs to have them ears tested. I think the vox wants a little less reverb and that will bring it that tad forward it needs. Thanks for sharing

A bit out of my normal country genre, but back in the day I played in a 3 piece band and we rocked pretty heavy..... My first thought exactly....this ain't the Herb that I've come to know. This has got a ZZ Top flare all over it. Very nice! Are you playing slide, Herb? Awesome guitar tones, what are you using for the lead tones on this one? More songs like this please!!! Now your going to have to grow one of those long beards. Edit: I'm a little slow some times, I went back up to the top and you answer most of my questions in the first post. It's the Boogie. I might have to search out one of those boys one of these days, I sure have enjoyed the sound of yours over the years.

Grabbed my attention from the start. This is the sort of tune I would love to be able to play - and which is why I tend to write lyrics as I just don't have this talent. Good bit of fun, total road music.

Mike: Yeah, I'm attempting to play the slide..... it's easy to make noise but difficult to master it. On the whole beard thing..... my wife probably wouldn't like that too much...this is about the best I can do>>>> Ted: I'm glad it grabbed you right from the start...that's what a song should do. Freddy J: I have been trying to get a reasonably decent sounding slide for most of my life..... that part is true. Billy and the boys from Texas have been among my favorite bands and I learned a large number of their songs through the years and played their tunes in more clubs than I care to recall. But.... was that really a song about a Caddy? Or....was it a metaphor for something else entirely different?
