I kinda like this old Aphex Twin track, there's parts where it sounds like he just went out and recorded himself banging a stick against some railings:

"Singing in the Rain" (from A Clockwork Orange)

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Everything on the album - "Lark's Tongues in A s pic" by King Crimson, with percussionist Jamie Muir.

I missed a KC concert during this period. A friend of mine said Muir was thrashing a metal sheet with a chain and miss judged it and himself in the face with the chain, drawing a considerable amount of blood.

Good point about Santana.

For their first few albums, Guster had a percussionist and not a drummer.  He used his hands to "hit" bongos, timbales, cymbals, etc.  They eventually were joined by a drummer.

I love vibes.  I had one for a while.  I didn't learn how to play it the normal way.  Mostly, I used them like an over-sized glockenspiel or a celest.  Mostly to accent the music.
