Songs with hidden and dual meanings
I thought about this the other day while pondering how some words spelled backwards are other words,or how some words rearranged make other words. For instance- Santa/Satan. Then I remembered years ago the big squabble regarding backwards masked lyrics and how in most all of those cases the accusations were unfounded. Since then I'm sure some bands have deliberately done the backwards lyric thing. Then there are the songs that have lyrics that have double meanings like " Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" which was said to be written about LSD. I wonder how many other songs out there might be saying something else but not overtly saying it. Do you think some bands and I'm thinking probably something like bands that play death Metal are actively putting messages in code? Realistically most of them are doing it in our faces so maybe this isn't the norm any longer.

Puff the Magic Dragon - about drugs and gayness If you See Kay - an unfinished song by me. It is a song about a guy (me) who runs into another guy (the listener in the song) who is dating my ex girlfriend Kay. Clever lyrics like If you see Kay Tell her I love her And If you see Kay Why Oh You tell her I care Dr Wu - Steely Dan - a song about drug addiction and changing to a different drug/ or a song about a guy and his ex girlfriend Kid Charlemagne - Steely Dan - song about LSD chemist. Or could be about Cocaine chemist. Not sure that there is a double entendre here other than what form of drugs it is about Pretzel Logic - Steely Dan - DF says it is about time travel. I never saw that one. I thought it was just random. Godzilla - Blue Oyster Cult - a song about a Japanese monster, or a song about drug addiction? You tell me.

'Perfect Day' by Lou Reed another heroin song, apparently. So is 'Golden Brown' by the Stranglers, but I'm not sure the meaning is very 'hidden' in that case.

I've always been fascinated with hidden meanings and backmasking in music. Years ago I had a web site dedicated to backmasking. Some of it is totally coincidence. You can prove it by recording yourself playing the song and singing the song in question, and play it backwards. But this is by far, without a doubt, the most incredible piece of backmasking I've ever heard ... Link Here. I've never seen it on the web except for my site and never heard about it before I discovered it. I've played every Beatles and Queen album backwards dozens of times and found some pretty amazing stuff. The White Album and Sgt. Pepper had the most. Abbey Road had a little in Her Majesty. Hendrix did very little surprisingly. Stairway to Heaven by Zeppelin is littered with Satanic references. "Here's to my sweet satan" "Thank God I live for satan" "Because I live with satan I'm wicked" ... stupid crap like that. Then ... there are naturally occurring backmasking that some say are part of your subconscious. There's lots of examples of it out there. UPDATE: It's referred to as reverse speech not backmasking. Starise ... if you're interested let me know and I'll zip my old web site and post. You just have to save it to a folder on your desktop and run the 'index.htm' file. It's only like 5MB.

Bub Jimmy Page, who was the one more into the occults (as one of many other interests, but people seem to pick that one thing up more than the rest) once said (from memory) - If I spent my youth playing records backwards instead of learning to play, I wouldn't have made it this far. French is my native language, and hearing full sentences in french in english music is so common for me that I believe our mind will try to find something familiar anywhere it looks and to make sense out of chaos. I'm currently learning Russian and I hear french words combinations (ones which make sense) all the time. I've heard all the Led Zep "messages". Some of it is surprising. That being said, anyone who is playing that particular sound backwards is most likely looking for something, so they'll find whatever they want/ whatever they've heard it's supposed to be saying.

Thanks Bub, I would like to see that site if you want to link it! Bapu I have not had the chance to listen to the vid. I remember all of the fallout when it was discovered that there were hidden messages in songs. The right wing nuts jobs .vs the backmaskers. I am very conservative but I am also very open minded and I think the truth was somewhere in between the two views. I find myself doin things like reading words backward and counting the number of letters in words almost subconsiously. Maybe this is why I have an interest in this. I have no doubt that we pick up on and sense things we are not fully aware of at the time. I can hear a song on the elevator and its playing in my head two hours later. So I don't believe that there is nothing to the backward lyrics/masking. I believe that our perceptions are deeper than we understand them to be. Advertising people have been trying at all levels to get into our wallets for years and have been successful in a lot of it. By its very nature Satanic craft does indeed do things backwards so this would be the perfect thing for them to do. It can also be done by people for fun(Take Pink Floyd as an example,or Weird Al). I have more thoughts on this but I gotta get going for now...I'll return to this.

Hi, There is a faction of society, that thinks that the role of the artist is to spend his time hiding what they really want to say in ways that ... makes it hard to figure out what it is all about. In the end, few of us worry about those "symbols", since what you see and do, has nothing to do with the audience, and their perception of it. And this is the most important part of it all ... and there are many examples from the old psychedelic 60's that were nothing but a tease. One can take "White Rabbit" as having a double meaning, but in the end ... it's real and it's true, and the song is about drugs and them being mis-interpreted and abused ... guess what happened to the Bay Area right after it? ... everyone loved the song, and ignored the message! Nobody understood that "Purple Haze" was the new generation's anthem ... right after the National Anthem at Woodstock ... in other words ... here is the new music ... and it was true and then some! But there are some that will always be questionable ... and then you can look at the opposite ... the German band "Novalis" used strict wording by the writer/philosopher as the only lyrics for their music, and that is a message from them, or from the writer? The "medium" has become the message, but is NOT the message. But there is no reason to believe that the "message" is any more important than the listener ... after all, if you don't get it and you go back to collecting nuts for your little squirrells, the meaning is not important or that valuable! There are other ways ... that were much more visible during the Cold War days ... you didn't have to say it ... and a really good example of it is Guru Guru's last song on the album "Tango Fango", which is something rather strange, weird, and what not. but was done really nice in a very satirical way ... hoping to see the 2 Germany's together again ... and in the end, the "anthem" was not the "butchokaya" (spelling!), but ... yep ... Chuck Berry! Which was like saying ... it's a new day and time and place ... and it was lovely, subtle, fun, and not offensive. And it was done in 1974 before the Wall came down a few years later! You can say it with one song, or a word, or you can say it with a novel ... but is "War and Peace" as important as a totality, or a single page? Or Charles Dickens? I really think that sometimes meaning is ... over rated! ... and it takes the fun out of things. But you can take things like "... when the music is over, turn out the lights ... " and the meaning could be sleep, death, loss of awareness as in a faint ... but is that what the music and song is about? ... NOPE ... it's about it not meaning anything to you or I, or our experience, and us not learning ... Guess what we're doing here? ... having fun with songs that were ... pretty clever ... but nothing to write home to mamma about.

Hi, For the Beatles stuff, if you have a chance, catch their 7 "Beatles Christmas Shows" ... there really are no innuendos there per se, but one can see easily enough how creativity sometimes arises ... it's not about a double entendre as much as it is about expression, from my point of view. I think I'm gonna put on the 10CC ... that one song about the worst song/band in the Sheet Music LP ... I love that guitar faux-pas that is a pretty direct FU to the music industry!

Rain Bub Jimmy Page, who was the one more into the occults (as one of many other interests, but people seem to pick that one thing up more than the rest) once said (from memory) - If I spent my youth playing records backwards instead of learning to play, I wouldn't have made it this far. I was one of the smart ones ... when I was a kid, I wired my Sony Walkman to play tapes backwards in Electronics Shop class so I wouldn't ruin my records and needle. My teacher was an old fuddy duddy. He asked me what I was doing to my Walkman so I handed him the headphones and told him to hit play. His eyes bugged out of his head and he threw the headphones at me and said, "Bub (he called me by my real name), what the hell is wrong with you?!" He heard Zeppelin saying Satan right away and was very offended by it. We never got along after that. LOL! I've even heard it in movies. I can pick up on it right away, but I also believe I'm wired to hear it. I have a habit of reversing things, numbers, letters in words, I've always been that way. Not dyslexic, but prone to reversing things. I play guitar left handed although I write with my right hand, play baseball right handed, catch a ball right handed. I really think some peoples minds are just wired for it. You look like you play left handed in your avatar. Sometimes it's done intentionally, sometimes it's just coincidence that it sounds like something, and I really do believe it happens subconsciously as well. I read one time that they used to play subliminal messages behind the muzak in malls to get people not to steal. I made a small background image that said 'Use Buy It Now' for my eBay auctions and put it on a 45 degree angle and filled the screen with it. I made the font color so light it was almost invisible against a white background. It was rare that people bid on my stuff. I would say almost 90% of the time they used Buy It Now. Was it the subliminal message I used? Who knows. :)
