Orchestral Companion Strings
9 GB library comprising string ensembles for 1st violins, 2nd violins, violas, cellos and basses. Articulations include sustains, espressivo, staccato, pizzicato, tremolos and more.
Orchestral Companion Brass
5 GB library comprising Solo and Ensemble Trumpets, Solo and Ensemble Trombones, Solo and Ensemble French Horns and Tuba. Articulations include sustains, staccato, marcatto, mutes, and more.
Orchestral Companion Woodwinds
9 GB library comprising Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon. Solo and ensembles versions of each as well as full woodwind ensemble patches.
Eighty Eight Ensemble
11 GB collection featuring a Steinway 9-foot CD337 Concert Grand, recorded in the same hall as the orchestral instruments for a perfect mix.

Each patch and preset is easily playable by virtually any level of performer. All instruments are presented in multi-velocity layers, with natural swells available via the modulation wheel. MIDI key-switching provides on-the-fly articulation changes for select patches. The internal sound engine provides additional modulation (LFO) sources, dynamic envelope control, and studio-grade reverb/effects to allow creative customization of the on-board sounds.
Award-winning engineers Antonio Oliart and John Bono recorded everything at the Futura Productions studios in Massachusetts. Members of the Boston Pops and Boston Ballet Orchestras played all performances with the same instruments they use for their actual concerts. A combination of spot and ambient mic'ing captured every instrumental nuance, while preserving the refined acoustics of the performance space itself. Benchmark-caliber preamps fed premium-level A/D converters to complete a pristine audio signal chain.
The players were positioned using orchestrally-correct seating, and measures were even taken to compensate for the sound-absorption effect of any players absent on that particular day.
"This collection provides an important offering for composers looking to add dramatic orchestration or musical effects to their productions. Of course a beautiful sounding set of instruments came first, but we also insisted the collection be extremely playable so busy composers can get their tracks produced quickly, " said Jennifer Hruska, Vice President of Software Development at SONiVOX. I've never used Sonivox products.

The only thing I have from Sonivox is the original Vocalizer (1) plugin.....I actually have 2 copies (1 was a gift after I purchased). It's 32 bit (maybe it's 64 now) and I haven't used it in a couple of years, but a very interesting product. Very cool to just talk out some words (keeping it in tempo) and then playing out a melody on the keyboard......almost like you're singing, without singing.

For the price these are offered it's a nice package. If you have nothing orchestral in your arsenal yet then I'd this would be a good place to start. Sound is good and you have the basic articulations there as well as solo and ensemble instruments.

along with a WHOLE LOT OF OTHERS and it was, at last hearing
$299.99 for all of them on a portable hard drive...

But, after checking the site, they don't seem to be selling it anymore...
even though they are still offering it on their site, which takes you to
the Akai Pro Site, which doesn't offer anywhere to buy it...

The demos certainly weren't selling me on the product line. For the most part the brass, strings and percussion all sounded pretty generic. You could have told me they were all from SampleTank3 and I'd have believed you. 
 
But to be fair, I'm looking at it from the standpoint of someone who already has a number of libraries to choose from. This package would be a great entry-level bundle for somebody starting from scratch. It's at least on par with the factory patches in my ROMpler, which aren't anything special but I do use them regularly.

I agree Bit...they are "ok" and can be made to do the job for a minimal investment.
Would they be my first choice...nope...ST 3...don't even get me started

If you happen to also have Addictive Keys, the two of them together make a nice combination of "woodiness" and clarity.
 

Cheers, Steve, I have AK so how would I go about combining them?
(Forgive this noob, for he does not know what he has asked.)

Just insert one instance of each and have them play the same MIDI clips, then balance to taste.   Obviously things like this are subjective, but I do think the samples offer differences that nicely complement each other.
