Hi, Guys and Gals, and a Very Happy New Year to you all! Here's another "leftover" guitar test song that I recorded back in April, and promptly abandoned because I wasn't sure if it fit my usual style or not. I dug it back out over the holidays and touched the very basic mix up a little bit and decided to get your input and opinions on it. The song is very basic and minimalistic, with just two rhythm guitar tracks, two vocal tracks, two bass tracks, short guitar solo and drums. Please let me know what you think, and of course, as always, all helpful input, constructive criticism, observations and advice are welcome and greatly appreciated!

You have the heavy metal production down. This would be a great bar song. Other than the abrupt ending, this is a good mix.

Happy New Year!
I always like the tones that you have on your guitars.
To be honest on this offering I do not think this is the right drum rhythm for this tune.
The whole timing of it seems off because of it. Hope you don't mind my 2 cents.

Nice one Bob, great sound as always, and big, wide open mix. Got to agree with Thatsastrat above - there's something not quite right about the drums - they seem to be playing a shuffle while the guitars aren't.

I just took a second listen specifically to determine if the drums are appropriate for this type of song. It's not your typical drum pattern for a heavy metal song, which is why I think that it throws some for a loop. However, I like it because it's different and less predictable. It works for me.

Hey Bob. This had me goin pretty good thru the intro. And then the meat of the drums came in. The kik is like playing a whole nother groove. Like a shuffle and everything else is straight. Also think things need dirtied up a bit. Oh, just looked up and I guess others agree. I think this tune and the concept have a whole lot of potential.
I would also suggest abstracting your lyrics some. They seem very clinical and from the songwriters dictionary of 1987 . I don't mean to be offensive as I think you have a great metal style and voice. You need to take it to the next level.

Great guitar sounds nice build, but the drum pattern for the Kick drum kinda spoils the whole thing. The swing on the kick makes it sound like you hired a Country and Western drummer for the evening.

You know I have alway liked your stuff and your production is always 1st rate. With that said, this is not my favorite song I've heard from you. The drums loop sounds like a mismatch for the tune, and while sometimes less is more.... I have heard you do alot tastier work on the rythem guitars before. This one stays real simple and doesn't seem to really get to anywhere if that makes sence? BTW, when the guitar on the right comes in, in he intro I don't know... sounds a little abrasive or abrupt. Maybe fade it in slightly? The lead is smoking as usual!

I have to agree with Tim on the kick. But I'm not offended by it. Maybe change the bass to follow the kick and it might interesting?
I'd up the tempo by 3-5bpm.

I love the song as well. Great rocking fun.
I have to agree with others. The drums sound wrong imo. Everything else is fantastic!

Hey Guys,
Thanks very much to everybody for checking out this weird little "Frankenstein" experiment of mine! 
I truly appreciate your honesty and up front observations and input, and for confirming that my original gut instinct was right on this one.
Just a little back story on the song, and why I abandoned it to the cobwebs of my hard drive for nine months. Usually when I write a song, it hits me all at once like an instantaneous bolt of lightning, melody, rhythm, title, vocals, harmonies all in one shot. In other words, I don't ever really sit down and say "Hey I'm going to write a song". It's always just a quick flash and I have everything in my head and then try to capture what I hear in my head into Sonar. This song started out last April as a simple sound test for a new guitar, and I really didn't intend to turn it into a song. I plugged in my drum pads and was trying to come up with a simple drum beat to play to, going for something kind of similar to the old Deep Purple song, "My Woman From Tokyo", but my sucky drumming ended up closer to a basic country/rockabilly shuffle type beat. It definitely wasn't what I set out to play, but it was really just for a guitar sound check, so I decided to just play to it. It snowballed from there, and I ended up making the mistake of letting the drum track dictate the entire song, right down to the two part rockabilly style harmony during the chorus. I ended up thinking it was an interesting experiment mashing up two genres, but thought it was way too different to fit in with my normal stuff. Sort of like the Scorpions meet the Georgia Satellites and have a "mutant" baby, but, just a little too weird to actually be cool. I played it for my wife and she said she thought it was "catchy", but really way different than my usual style, so I just forgot about it until last week.
In the future, I might try completely changing the drums, but I know I'll probably have to scrap the chorus vocals, or at least radically change them to make it work and get them back into my normal style.

I seriously want to thank you guys for your help and your honesty, it truly means a lot to me. In my initial post I didn't want to let on exactly what was bugging me about the song, because I wanted to see what the general opinion here was. Everybody immediately honed in on exactly what my gut feeling was, so this one's going on the back burner for a little while longer.
I'll be posting my first music video in a week or so, and have a couple of new songs in the works, so stay tuned. Thanks again, guys, you're the best! You know Bob, I was listening again and thinking what if the song (guitars) morphed into that shuffle beat? So, like it's a little weird when the drums come in, but, slowly before the vocs come in the guits change into the shuffly thing. Just a thought. That would be a cool turn. And, I was probably a little harsh about the lyrics. They sound fine. I've just been working on a tune where I use a line like "you . .blah blah blah, I see it in your eyes". And, I hate it. But, It won't go away:)
