Sound Before Recording

I'm using Home Studio 2002 on a new computer with a Pentium 4 and 512MB Ram. With my mic's off, as soon as I select the Record button on a new project, I get background noise showing on the UV meters. I have the mic's going into an Audio Buddy and plugging them into the mic input on the front of the computer. It seems a couple years ago I found a fix for the issue on my old computer, here in the forum, but didn't write the fix down. Does anyone have any ideas on what might correct this?

In fact, I get the noise at around -32 dB, even when I don't have the mic's or Audio Buddy hooked up to the computer.

In Windows Mixer, Record - Volume - Advanced, uncheck the 'Mic Boost' box.
This will drop the gain at that point by 20 dB.

You should not plug into the MIC input of your computer. The Audio Buddy is a preamp...You should be plugging into the LINE input of your computer...Better still, you really should have an external mixer (with mic/line inputs) that has the capabilities of monitoring previously recorded tracks while you add new audio/MIDI overdubs...
