I' have it. I downloaded from iTunes.

It's good. David has a big heart and passion for music. And he is a workaholic in his professions. l Ike the guy. I like some if his music but I have a huge respect on his appreciation for other artist and his work ethic as well as heart for the craft and art.

    The movie shows this.

I love Paul McCartney too. But the song they recorded on that sound city board is pretty bad. That's the last part of he movie.

None the less... If Paul wanted me to record a bad song with him...I'd be honored.

Ps... The Stevie Nicks song isn't the great either. She's had plastic surgery on her face of nose or something. You would have thought the doctor would have pulled the snot out of  her nose while he was at it so she would sing a little better no?

I recorded my second album with Sue Saad & The Next at Sound City in 1980.  Spent a good deal of time in Studios Aand B working on Neve consoles.  We had guests players including Vini Casanova (KISS), Tom Peterson (KISS), and David Foster.

Planet Records could not release it when they lost their distribution deal.  That was a great studio.  Tom Petty was there when we were.  Great times a long time ago.

    hey Rimshot.
just wondering if you realised the significance of the studio when you were there or was it just another day at the office for you-did you feel the "magic"?

Realized the significance but as time went on, it was like other big studios in L.A. Like The Record Plant and Capital.

Thanks for sharing your story Jimmy. That must have been a lot of work and a lot of fun.

I watched the movie and was surprised to learn how many of my favorite albums were on the list.

I was also interested when I realized that so many of them had a sonic signature that tied them together.

The sound of those drums defined a sound for me. Realizing there was a specific relationship seemed like kind-of-a-big-deal when I watched the movie.

Are there any leak tapes of Sue Sadd and the Next?

    best regards,
    mike

    H Mike,

Sorry, no leak tapes for Sue Saad.  You can look up Sue Saad and listen to a number of songs we did for films.  Those track were done in my Sound Logic Recording Studios studio I built in Los Angeles.

Interesting view on the sound signature.  At Sound City Studio A, it was a large echoing room.  Drums had a live, crisp feel to them.  I recorded my on a slightly elevated floor.  Tom Petty recorded his on a high platform ( I think to reduce phasing from the floor relfections).  The control room monitors were extremely bright and rather hard on the ears.  They did translate incredibly well.

They've been showing "Sound City" on the Palladia channel the past few days. As Tony indicated, it is a worthwhile watch if you get the chance. Re-showing right now as I type. Lot of bands recorded there. There is a lot of attention to the Neve console used there. Definately an appeal to the recording crowd. They discuss the crossover between an analog studio and digital.

The Paul McCartney sequence was interesting. He really came across as just one of the guys. It was cool.

Missed this first time round, so I just watched it and found it very interesting. Whilst I've never particularly been a Nirvana / Foo Fighters fan, the more I see of Dave Grohl, the man, the more I think what a cool guy he would be to hang out with. Seems a genuinely nice guy with a great sense of humour and a very deep appreciation of all styles of music.

It was on cable last night. I was flipping channels and happened upon it on channel 66..( VHS-1 ? ) ....... I caught it just a few minutes in and watched the entire show.  My wife, who usually doesn't like the shows on that channel happened to be walking through when Stevie Nicks was singing.... and she stopped to watch for a minute or two.

Dave's love for the music and that old console and 2" tape is commendable. It was good to see that ...as they said in the documentary.... the console didn't get bubble wrapped and stored in some warehouse or museum somewhere...that instead,  people are still able to use it. That was a labor of love.

    Hey Tim,

Sorry, I just saw your post.  I worked at The Record Plant, Capital Records Studios, Sound City, A&M, CBS, and a bunch of good smaller studios mostly as a studio drummer.
I played with Sue Saad at Madam Wong's with Danny Elfman from Oingo Bongo, The Londoner (that's where we played before signing with Planet Records), The Whiskey, The Troubador, and then we opened for UFO at the Long Beach Sports Arena.  My studio was on Glendale Blvd. at Highway 5 near Los Feliz in the little town of Atwater.  The Beastie Boys took it over.  Sue Saad also opened for Tom Petty, The Baby's, and Boomtown Rats up in the Northwest.  I'll stop there.

I just watched most of this documentary this morning on Amazon (prime). I thought it was really good and want to watch it again with my wife. I think she could appreciate it.

I watched it up to the point, and a little beyond, where Dave Grohl moved the console to his own studio. I think the documentary would have been a bit better if it had stopped it there. I will go back and finish the rest, but as far as telling a story, it should have stopped there, IMHO.

I did not follow a music career so I did not appreciate any of what was talked about in the movie at the time those albums came out. Watching it now sure gives me a different perspective.

No, none of us has ever heard of 'Mike McGear', lead singer with 'The Scaffold', painful 'comedy' group from the early '70's.

    Hi,

    Hehehehe!

Scaffold, Grimms, and Mike McGear's solo album ... I have them all, and they are much more enjoyable than so much of the crap that Paul has put together over the years. You could take 5 of Paul's albums and make a decent one out of it, and I still would not buy it. In fact, not bothered since "Band on the Run".

The last McCartney album I really liked and still love listening to it is .... RAM! But that's an album that no one seems to like! Long cuts, too!

Honestly, Paul is becoming like the Rolling Stones ... that the media thinks anything they do is fine and whatever, and they are not! If it were Johnny Shchmoe's Coffe House Band, no one would give a crap and listen to that pile of junk, but because it is the "gods", they can **** on us, and we're supposed to be in awe!

Get over it! Paul's time is dead and gone! Loved his work earlier, but he's not been relevant for 30 years!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Agree 100% Ram is the only McCartney album I like too.

Disagree 100%. I haven't liked everything he has done, but I do like most of it.
