Sound Forge 10 not loading with sound file
Using Sonar Platinum and Sound Forge 10 with Windows 10 ...Prior to this machine, I was successful using various versions of Sound Forge (up to 10) with Sonar (1-8.5). With this current PC, I had to create a registry entry to gave it list under so it would show up in the Utilities menu. I followed the instructions here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013099/Adding-third-party-audio-editing-software-to-SONARs-Utilities-menu Granted, it's for X2, not Platinum, but I couldn't find anything else. Well, the entry is now there in the Utilities menu, but id I use "WaveEditor" in Type in the Registry, the entry is grayed out and not selectable. If I replace Type with "Generic", it's selectable, and opens Sound Forge. But the audio file doesn't load. I've seen others having this problem (searching the forums), but the problem was usually resolved with something like not putting the space between "wave" and "editor". As stated above, I didn't, but it still doesn't work. Perhaps there's some documentation I missed or something...Has anyone encountered this and resolved it?

The type must be WaveEditor for SONAR to send the clip name and REGION arguments to Soundforge. The instructions are still accurate. I wrote a utility to help get the entries correct called SONARToolsEditor. It can be found here http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3392713 I am finishing up a utility run tools as administrator such as SoundForge without setting SONAR up to run as administrator. Currently SONAR must be run as administrator to run SoundForge.

Thanks for the reply scook. There's certainly a lot on the thread you linked. I bookmarked it and will go through it thoroughly. I downloaded the SONARToolsEditor. Between the easy interface and the help files, I was able to figure out how to use it. Unfortunately, it didn't change the results. Here's an image of the Sound Forge entry: Edit: Image didn't take There's still no change to the functionality. When set to WaveEditor, the option is there, but after I select it, the option grays out. Sound Forge is not called. It works for others so I must have something wrong somewhere. I hope to be able to fix this as accessing Sound Forge is a large part of my workflow. I'd appreciate any help.

Hi,
I was not aware that Sonar could start Soundforge within running Sonar. However, I do use Soundforge 10 (and before 8 and 9) as well for a long time but outside Sonar. This does not change what you noticed.
Soundforge is not adapted for use in W10 and I noticed two "problems" that can be worked around.
As has been mentioned above, In W10 SoundForge has to be run as administrator which can be done by right clicking the program. I have pinned it to the task bar and then right click this icon to get the menu to select "use as administrator".
When the program has started the opening of files normally can also be done by dragging and dropping, but in W10 this does not work. So you have to use "File | Open"
Hope this helps a bit.

Practically anything may be added to the SONAR Tools menu. The drag and drop issue is not unique to SoundForge. I am pretty sure it is an issue with any program running as administrator. At least it also holds for SONAR. This is one reason it would be nice to run SONAR without administrator and still be able to launch SoundForge from the Tools menu.

Yeah, Sound Forge doesn't work without running as Administrator, and I've tried running Sonar both as Admin and not. (My account is the Administrator account.) I get identical results. It could be a Windows 10 thing, but I would have thought that someone would have mentioned something. I haven't found Win 10 as being the problem in any of my searches.

I have it on my Tools menu. It works just fine. Of course, the program is greyed out until I select a clip. While I am an administrator on my machine, I do not directly log into the administrator account. To be honest, I have not even bothered to look up how to access it in Win10. As a result when SONAR is not running as administrator, launching SoundForge throws the "Cannot Create Process" error.

i'm running SF 10 under Win10 without issues - i installed both under my user account rather than admin and both seem to run fine as a user. it may be that if you installed the programs as admin, some of the registry settings are missing from the user hive. the drag and drop to SF 10 is not working but presumably if the parameters sent to SF from SONAR, it should launch - the exception may be permissions into whatever temp folder is being used. for those running admin, it could be that the temp folder needs permissions loosened so user launched programs etc.

You might also try uninstalling SoundForge and re-installing it as Administrator. You might have to manually remove SoundForge's related registry keys.
Sony says all of its products must be run as Administrator. Log in as Administrator. Right-click on the SF shortcut, go to Properties -> Compatibility and check the "Run As Administrator" checkbox, and click the button labeled "Change settings for all users".
As a last resort, you might try disabling UAC. (Control panel -> User Accounts -> Change User Account Control, set the slider to Never.)
 All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I have had no problems with SF10 running it in W7 and before (W98, W2000 and XP). But in W10 running as admin must be selected.
I did not check platinum, but in X2 there is no tools menu.

Turn around just now....It's working at the moment, which is the first it's ever worked since I've been on this PC. There were a lot of ideas above and I try to do things incrementally (so I know what would have done the trick), I don't know if I've got it pinpointed. One thing that I had not tried before was bitflipper's suggestion with "Change settings for all users". To be honest, I never paid any attention to that before. But I turned Admin off FOR BOTH Sounds Forge and Sonar Plat. The first thing I noticed is that I could drag a waveform into Sound Forge. I wasn't able to do that before. But I still couldn't load one into SF directly. But then I loaded a different file into Sonar and I was able to load an audio file into SF. I purposely updated it and it loaded back into Sonar fine!
As I said above, SF seems to not work when it's not opened as an Admin, so I don't know if this will crash and burn the next time I turn on the PC. But maybe the "Change settings for all users" fixed that...Fingers crossed!
But in any event, thanks so much, everyone! It's nice to be part of a strong and supportive user community!

Also to me this was very helpful. With the link above I could update the register which led to a normally working Sound Forge. After doing that I looked in the utilities menu, but no Sound Forge menu item.
I went up in this thread and followed the link mentioned. Followed the steps there and noticed that Sound Forge was already listed. After re-reading the text to do the modifications I noticed that the ampersand (&) was missing in the string value of the MenuText key.
Then restarted Sonar Platinum but Sound Forge still did not show up in the Utilities menu.
Then I searched the registry for Tools Menu and checked them all for the ampersand. There was one Tools Menu missing the Sound Forge key and string values. So I inserted them according to the instructions et voilà there it was.
A bit confusing is that the menu in the program is called Utilities and in the registry you have to look for Tools Menu. This may differ for complete new installations.
So another happy guy.

Been having this issue ever since I got my Sonar Platinum. Read your post and VOILA, problem of almost 2 years solved! you're a LIFE SAVER!!!!

A number of years ago there was a change from Tools menu to Utilities menu.
Simply get scook’s utility referenced in post #2. It’s by far the most reliable method to get all the various text lines accurate.
