Sound Forge upgrade
Sony is offering an upgrade to Sound Forge 10 until March 31 for $167.97. I'm tempted because SF 8 won't work properly for me in Vista. For some strange reason SF 5 (Sonic Foundry) does, even though when I open it, I get a message that a problem occurred and the only button to click says "Close Program". I click it and the program opens. Also, I would like to upgrade to Windows 7. I have the disk, but I'm afraid that if I do I might not even have SF 5. I know that SF 10 will work in 7. The iZotope effects and the fact that it works in 64 bit are also appealing. However, I seem to remember that in the past, when a new version came out there would be an option to upgrade for $99. It's been a while since version 10 was released, so I'm wondering if a new version is about to come out and I could get something even better for $68 less. Is anyone familiar with their pattern with these things? Is my concern legitimate?

fwiw, SF9 works fine in Windows 7 x64. Sorry, not tried SF8.

I've been on the fence about upgrading to SF 10 as well, but $168 sounds a lot more appealing than $225 does. I was wondering the same thing, though - is a newer version coming along that I would only have to pay $99 for? Hard to say, as I haven't seen any indication that a newer Sound Forge is on the way, and even if it was, I don't know what more they could put in it. The core functionality has been almost unchanged for 4 or 5 versions now, and except for adding VST support (in 8) and some extra plugs, I'm not sure that 10 is that much of an upgrade. By the way, I have SF 8 working in Windows 7 (64-bit), so if you do upgrade to Windows 7 it should work for you.

I remember the $99 upgrades but I haven't seen a reason to go beyond SF9. I'm happy with that and it works in Win 7 x64.

I don't take advantage of the features enough to justify upgrading. Also stuck at Ozone4 and the old Melodyne, Sonar 8.3, etc... But hey? It all works pretty good :-)

TimV I got an email from them. Here's the page it linked to: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/upgrade/soundforge?userial=HST2ZV28REPWBCRRL4C6&keycode=64562 By the way, where did you see this price? I don't see it on their website anywhere. Tim: thanks a bunch for that link! I usually get their emails, but I didn't get this one for some reason. This may be the best price I'm going to get for a while. Dave: If I had SF9 I doubt that I would upgrade, either. In fact, I may not gain a whole lot upgrading from SF8, so I am going to have to think hard about whether I want to spend the money or not. I might be better off waiting until the next version comes around and see if there is a better upgrade price. I REALLY don't see where they get off charging $249 for an upgrade - no wonder bitflipper refers to them as one of the evil empires!

Well I did an impulse upgrade purchase here (from SF 7) and while things work ok, I wish I had investigated further before buying: 1) it's still a 32 bit app, even though it works fine under Win7. 2) the Izotope plugs are 32 bit and I can't seem to make them show up in Sonar. This is the real bummer for me. Paul

You may try re-installing on your Vista machine and only scan the vst's you really use in SF. Could be one of those buggers causing you trouble... Soundforge 8.0d build 128 works like a champ on Vista64 here. The only annoying thing is the pop up help window from time to time. Can't find a cure for that. But I won't upgrade for the price anyway. If it was more like $50 or $60 I would go for it. SF8 does all I need with the efx chaining, editing... Also, I find I'm using X1 more with some keybindings for some of the cleanup work I need.
