Sound card not working properly?

I just got a new sound card to make better-sounding music. It's the SB X-Fi Synth A(E800). It sounds much better than my laptop did, BUT it won't play strings correctly at all. I tried using different banks, but just can't find one where the violin, viola and cello sound right at all. It seems like the other sounds are pretty good. Any ideas? Could it be something wrong with the sound card? Thank you!

No offense, Janet, but I haven't heard any SB soundfonts that were really that great sounding myself. you have to pay decent money to find decent sounding strings. my first strings purchase was Gigastudio Ensemble 3 which is currently out of production, but you can still find some around for about $50 - and it includes a really nice sounding piano too.

Thats a game card, sorry to tell you that and it wont improve your audio recoridngs. It doesnt have a good A/D and D/A conversion and it doesnt even have a good timing clock. its nbot an audio recording sound card. Maybe an Edirol FA-66 or an EMu would have been a better choice.
Creative has 2 lines, the EMu thats for audio recording and soundblaster thats for gaming.

Thanks so much to both of you. That's sad news--my son, the computer expert, just bought this for me and it was about $90.00! Well, maybe we can try another one. Appreciate it you guys!

if you want advice on recording sound cards, see my recommendations here:
    http://homerecording.beaglesound.com/9.html

the card you have is not a recording card, it's a game card as CJ says, but there are people who use them for recording and do OK. you've just seen some of the limitations already. the soundfonts are OK, but they're not top quality.
