SoundCloud vs SoundClick & ReverbNation

Hi everybody!

Just a simple observation and food for thought:

The SoundCloud player is accessible from iPad and iPhone, whereas SoundClick and ReverbNation players are not. I always have my iPad and/or iPhone with me but am hardly ever near my PC anymore. I'd love to be able to listen to the songs on the forum but I can only listen to the songs that are posted to SoundCloud or hosted somewhere that defaults to a media player such as QuickTime.

With more and more people turning to mobile devices, would you guys be opposed to posting your music on SoundCloud so that it could be heard by more people?

Soundcloud and nothing else! I find reverbnation and soundclick to be slow, cluttered and sometimes crash on CERTAIN browers. Ill be honest, I only listen to songs on the cakewalk forum if they are soundcloud, thats how arrogant I am!

    Whack,
    I hear ya!

    James,
They work great for listening if you use decent headphones, ear buds or sound dock.

I use all three sites when I upload music. When I listen to music I am in the studio so it does not matter which site I use. Sound click and Reverbnation seems to take slightly longer to load. I remember reading debates about which one actually sounds better. To be honest though I don't think there is much difference.

Whack: It is good to know you only hear sound cloud songs. I think sound cloud's design is simple yet effective. While some people only post their music on one of these sites you present a good reason to use sound cloud as well. I think it is a good idea to use all 3 communities In order to reach more people. This is just from a marketing aspect.

I was all ready to join Soundcloud, and then I was unable to listen to several posters because Soundcloud was unable to load on my computer for several days.  The same was true for Reverbnation when their server went on the blink for 2 or 3 days.  I still may upload to Soundcloud just to compare with Soundclick.  Cian, I hope you don't stop listening to my songs just because I'm not on SC.

So everyone has to change what they do because iphones/pads don't work properly ? Mebbe people should just buy something that does ? ;)

BTW - No offence intended Scotty - but is it just me that finds the whole "sent from my i-pad/ phone " sig a bit.....well, sad ? Does anyone really care what device was used ?

I understand the point you are trying to make re maximum potential exposure. If I was attempting to make money at this, then I guess it would be sensible to pander to those who fall for the Apple hype, but as I'm not then I can't say I'm that bothered. TBH I have had a Soundcloud account since it first started, but I hardly ever use it. Although it is better in some ways - being able to load wavs etc - I find it to be quite inflexible (never figured out how to change song order for example) and I don't like the way that the music won't carry on playing if you click on the persons profile etc, whereas soundclick will just carry on playing while you browse.
Also, personally I find it slower to load and if one of them is going to be down it will nearly always be souncloud. Can't get on with Reverbnation at all, always takes three or four attempts to get anything to play for me.

@ Cian - as for refusing to even try to listen to something simply because it isn't on soundcloud, well you said it.....!   Just as well everybody doesn't take that view or you would have considerably less listeners yourself.

Here is a revelation for you.  I've been an information technology director for 35 years, as well as a programmer, and I have lived computers for nearly 40 years.  I've learned ti hate computers and I'm just about the only person in our whole organization that doesn't own a smartphone and doesn't want one.  People question a lot why I'm not head-over-heels in love with all thing techy... But I'm not.

Once everyone has a smart phone, the art of communication will be lost forever.  Eveyrone is going to mp3s and earbuds when we should be going to 64 bit digital and really big kick-ass speakers.  I'm a dinosaur.

What little I've used Revebnation, it doesn't seem as easy as SoundClick, but I pay to keep the adds off Soundclick, which makes it look better.

Ok, Its not totally black and white with me and I will listen to songs I wanna hear from people I like, dont matter where it is posted (Its ok Lynn, I listen to your stuff anyway). Its just if I quickly wanna listen to a few random songs, nice and briskly on the forum, I actually get turned off if I see a soundclick or reverbnation link, just because I've had bad experiences with them. That's just straight up feedback, would like to know if anyone else is the same. Yes Paulo you are right!

Scottytunes, I didn't actually answer your mobile question, but there is no question that more mobile devices are being used than ever, not to mention the apple brand, which I own myself. At the end of the day you want people to listen to your music and if there's more access to soundcloud, well then its a pretty big pull factor or a no-brainer if you ask me! I know people will defend the others, but each to their own. They all have their market share.

    Amen to Sound Cloud!!!

I have the others but dont use them for one reason or another. (Take forever to loads if it loads most of the time, Sound Cloud is Hit Play and its off and runnin'.)  Plus I think the player sounds better with their WAVE Files

Actually, listening to forum members songs on my iphone is a great idea.  I don't know why I had n't thought of that until now.  I guess I just was determined to listen with my studio monitors.

I just went to Marcus Curtis's Reverbnation site and his Sound Click site and played them on my iPhone 5.  I did n't seem to have any issues loading them up and playing them.  Then I went over to Robbies, Doggie Style and tried his ReverbNation site and that worked fine as well.

My only issue with Sound Cloud so far has been the "look" of the site.  It just did not look like a professional music page too me.  I think Sound Click looks kind of old as well.  I guess I am interested in something that just looks more like a personal web page with out having to start my own web page.  I have not really noticed a difference in sound quality on any of the sites.  Guess I will have to pay more attention to Sound Cloud to see if it really does sound better.

Incidentally, I really like the new iPhone 5 head phones over the old style.  Much improved bass and mids in my opinion.

Like Daryl, JamesG, and a few others here, I pay extra for the premium version of SoundClick, so I can upload higher resolution MP3s(320kbps), no adds, and more capacity... It's sometimes buggy, but then, they all are...

I also use SoundCloud, but some tracks just don't sound right to me...
Even when I upload the original wave, I sometimes (not always)hear wow/flutter/warble and other artifacts after soundcloud does its thing...

I have stuff on ReverbNation, YouTube, and a few others that I never go to anymore... I'm starting to lose interest in all of 'em...

Soundcloud all the way but only with 24 bit files. Like Frank, I heard all sorts of crap with standard 16 bit files.
Thankfully, with Soundcloud, the size of the file is unimportant. Your useage is measured by time - you get 120 minutes of song time on the free version.
It's also easy to share on social media sites

    Hi Mike,

Just a quick note to let you know that all the music on my sound click and Reverb Nation sites were made using Sonar 5. The music was recorded shortly after that version was released. This excludes the music videos on Reverbnation. They were made using Sonar 8.5

The only exception to this Is the AGL theme song and video which was made using X1. Thanks for taking the time to check out my music. I will check out your tunes as well my friend!

Might as well use them all.  I have a page on:

    SoundClick
    SoundCloud
    MySpace
    IndabaMusic
    IndieMusicWorks
    SYM

I haven't checked out ReverbNation yet but maybe I should.

I used to have a band page on FaceBook, but the music widget app stopped functioning and they stopped supporting it.

If we are out somewhere and decide to try and sell a gig and do not have a CD with us, I pull it up on my cell so the potential customer can hear what they need to.  ( Excellent selling point )  Like always having a DEMO on hand when ya need it

Soundcloud ALL the time.  And the best thing, and no one has mentioned it, is the feed.

I follow people from here and elsewhere, their new tracks hit my feed, and when I get time to listen, all I have to do is grab my headphones and start commenting in-line with the track.  The feed plays one song after another- no search or jumping back and forth to a forum. It's all right.there.  LOVE IT and it seems to always work.

I was pondering this question myself as I have upload to only ReverbNation, but rarely use that site now.

And a little "rant" (well, I wouldn't call it that, but I do have a question and possibly a suggestion (to the Bakers) whether or not this'll work, but here it goes.

I haven't seen it here, but it'd be nice if you could upload files on the forum itself. (I do realize bandwith and filesize would be the deciding factors), but the MCS forum allows this.

Don't get me wrong and maybe it's a self-conscience/confidence issue, but assuming that files upload can't be taken down, that's alot of clutter to have 20 versions of the same file with subtle differences (and I know alot about this with the tracks I'm doing stored on my External HDD - I keep everything or at least most of it.)

For me, that's something I would probably do and think I have done is "redirect" folks who want to hear my tracks to the (MCS) Forum/Thread/Reply(ies) that have the files uploaded and I do believe there is a limit, but again only I have only a few members and not the entire internet community to think about.

Whether or not this eventually happens, makes no difference to me, but I thoght I'd make the suggestion.

Having said this, I may sign up for Click, Cloud or both. I don't know.

BTW - No offence intended Scotty - but is it just me that finds the whole "sent from my i-pad/ phone " sig a bit.....well, sad ? Does anyone really care what device was used ?

    1. Yep, seems like its just you.
    2. Apple seems to care. That's why they have that default sig.

    BTW,

I got REVERBNATION to play on my iPad. It takes a while to load and the sound quality might be a bit less.

    Good stuff, Marcus Curtis!!!

I've learned ti hate computers and I'm just about the only person in our whole organization that doesn't own a smartphone and doesn't want one.

Daryl, you're not alone. My love/hate relationship tipped toward hatred maybe 10 or 15 years ago, and I don't have nor need a "smart" phone. Like you I've lived and breathed computers and software for 40+ years and I don't see them as saviors nor companions. If they didn't let me make music on the cheap I'd have no room for them in my life - except, of course, to the extent that I still need a day job.

Slightly less off-topic: I'd like to start a movement to make all songs posted here downloadable. At least, the ones for which the posters own copyright. I don't want to hear all this great music via SoundCloud or SoundClick or Reverbnation, because they all stream at 128kb/s. If you truly want to share your creations with the world and spread some happiness, upload them to SoundCloud at 256kb/s or 320kb/s and make then freely downloadable. Let us hear them in high fidelity. Let us listen to them while we go for a walk or exercise at the gym or kill time in airport departure lounges.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'm sure everyone who's songs you post on? Will take this under careful consideration...

Let's see, there's Ummmm, and well who could forget? Ummm...  I'm sure the list is long, and it's only my memory which is short?

Just posting to say I'm on Cloud now (nothing is uploaded).

@ Bit, should they really be that "pristine"? (Don't know if that's the right word)
