Space Cowboy Saved the/my Day(s): Device Manager Cleaning

Been meaning to post a thank-you to the Galactic Ranger for pointing me to a link that has made my audio life easier and more fun.

For those who have problems with MIDI and/or USB connections (that's a joke - obviously that's everyone), here's a link that may save your day too - and show you that it's not Sonar's fault, it's San Andreas' fault:

That subject has been discussed a few times in this forum before. In fact I had forgotten about that trick and was having a BSOD from my UAD-2 that was frustrating me, then reading the tip I found two instances of uadpci.sys and removed one, and removed the crash.
I also found tons of USB drivers from forgotten thumb and removable HD drives and old usb keyboard drivers...

Yes a great reminder, I've just pruned out a lot of long gone USB garbage again...

Be careful with that though kids....the outcome of dealing with the unknown can be more obvious than any of us would like...

In fact if you define this :

    DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES

with a Value of 1 (one)

as an Enviroment Variable, then each time you choose Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices ... the you'll always see a) the hidden devices and b) those that are not currently in use.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

If you shouted out the title of this thread in the street you'd be sectioned but on this forum, it makes sense.

Here is a handy timesaver for you:

    Start > Run > cmd

Remember the directory that the command window opens into.

Start Notepad, then copy/paste these two lines in:

    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
    start devmgmt.msc

Save the file into the cmd directory that you remembered from above. Save it with a ".bat" extension. Give it a meaningful name, like "DeviceManagerShowNonpres.bat".

Then, the next time you want to do spring cleaning, just do this:

    Start > Run > cmd
Then in the command window, type "DeviceManagerShowNonpres.bat" and hit "Enter".

You can get fancier than this with shortcuts, but I'll leave that for someone else to post.
