Space Grunge Rock - Remix 30 March

A little while a go I got a message from Phil asking if all was OK as I had not posted anything recently well....

I present with the golden vocal chords of our very own Julibee

Remix version Pieces (On the Floor)

Original is still there for comparison

The Lyric (By Julibee)

Pieces

(Where are you when I’m here?)
I can’t do this anymore
Leave your pieces on the floor
Hit me running with your lies
(Where are you when I’m gone?)
And I’m no good with goodbyes
(Where are you?)

How long did you think I’d be standing by your side?
How long did you think I could take it all in stride?
How far could you push me how far would it go?
What else could you say to me and what else should I know?

(Where are you when I’m here?)
I can’t do this anymore
Just leave your pieces on the floor
Hit me running with your lies
(Where are you when I’m gone?)
And I’m no good with goodbyes
(Where are you?)

I tried to heal you I tried to feel you I tried to love you

It’s all over but the crying all over but the tears
Its all over for the laughter all over for me, dear
Take your endless sighing your hopelessness and fears
Take your lies and whispers and walk away from here

(Where are you when I’m here?)
I can’t do this anymore
Just leave your pieces on the floor
Hit me running with your lies
(Where are you when I’m gone?)
And I’m no good with goodbyes
(Where are you?)

I can’t do this anymore
Just leave the pieces on the floor
No more running with your lies

Music etc by The Wookiee

All comments etc. welcome Julibee and I already have some ideas we just want to see what you good peeps think.

Cheers

Well, first let me say that I feel privileged to have been any kind of catalyst for helping to put this fine collab together.  It turns out that all is well in the Kashyyyk - Village Yoh Kay .

I'll venture a guess that the music was already done when you guys set out to put this together, and that of course makes for a tougher assignment for the lyricist and melody writer.  I think that Jules did a great job within those constraints... that's not an easy piece to write and sing to.

I enjoyed it very much.  Great to have you both back!  Keep 'em coming.

Well, this is something unexpected from you John and it's really good.  Had a definite "Hawkwind" vibe to the muisic.

Julies vocals are a really nice contrast to the grungy backing track and it all works very well together. Julie is one very versatile singer, as this track proves.

Interesting and intelligent lyrics by Julie as always.

    Great work both.

Phil: Thank you, your push was appreciated.  The track was more or less complete,  Julibee proved what a true talent she is.

John: True a nod to Lemmy, Dave and Nick is more than appropriate many hazy days passed with their help.  Thanks appreciate the listen and the comment.

    Jan:  Thanks for the listen

Thanks to all the others who listened and a big thanks to Julibee who made it work.

This is a delight to me being an old Sci-fi fan; this well crafted piece manages to be both retro and futuristic at the same time. Love the melodies, the well crafted sounds and lovely voice. Reminds me of the good old days when woman in space all wore miniskirts and matching panties that you got to see a lot.. Loved it you 2

I like the tune. It has a.. what.. Flock of Seaguls... sound that I have not heard in a while. I think its kind of a cool retro. Now for the bad news. Do you have a Melodyne, Autotune, or some other pitch correction tool? Jules' vibrato needs to be flattened. She sounds so much better when she does not use vibrato. The mix is in need of some serious help John. This is a surprise coming from you. It is very flat and lifeless. I am not sure where to begin for sure, but I would try getting the vocals to sound rich and clear first.

I like it, but the mix seems really muddy, to me. I think the vocals could stand out a lot more without changing the 'space grunge' vibe. Other than that, I think it's pretty cool!

Warren: Thanks for the listen and the comment, Toontrack's Superior drummer Metal Foundry is the drums of choice on this one.

Grant: The days of mini skirted Sci fi females oh yes I remember thanks for the listen and the comment.

Shad: Thanks for the candour, my first stab at doing something with vocals and this is really the first pass.  Needed some fresh ears to have a listen, all your points are noted and I will be taking another look at the whole thing.  Julibee has also mentioned a few ideas as well.

Brent: Thanks for listening as I said above this is a first pass, anyone who knows my stuff I do not normally have any vox so all input is welcome.

I love this song and Jubilee's vocal.  The backing instruments could come up a bit, but it's close, as is.  Don't overthink this, and let your ears be your guide.  My hat's off to all involved.

Love the arrangement/production...  Great rhythm track... nice orchestration... I like the vocal, but it seems a little dry and it could benefit from some pitch correction... well done guys & gals...

    Hey, Wook!

It's always great to hear a new song post from you, and both you and Jules did a fantastic job together on this cool piece of modern electronica with a distinct 80's vibe!

Similar to Mooch's comment, I'm getting a bit of a Blondie and Berlin feel, with maybe even a touch of early Cars thrown in for good measure.

    Very cool song, nice work!

Interesting use of synths. I would mix those drums up a bit and put some more snap on that snare. I was unaware that this genera existed ;-)

Thanks Robby for the listen and comment though I feel I should say it is mainly real live have to play them type Guitar.
I used my Les Paul, which I made about thirty+ years ago, and a Fender Stratocaster both going through different Guitar rig 5 patches.  Bass provided by Novation KS Rack and a Roland JV 1080, squirly bit from a Roland JP8080, drums as noted above.  I have no idea what Julibee used for her recording chain.

The whole thing was then mixed in SONAR X2 Producer using no third party FX other than Guitar Rig 5.

Not sure the genera does exist I just thought it sounded Grungy in a Space rock way.

I enjoyed this - I would say though that I don't think the vocals fit well with this tune - vocals were not great - IMHO.

I'll give you an A for experimentation, which is lost these days.
years ago everyone experimented, they were innovators.
you don't see it as much these days as music has become more commericialized, I mean it always has but not like the cookie cutter music I hear on the radio now a day.

the mix didn't seem clear and powerful, but I cant really say much, im having problems myself lately in this area as ive gone back to the drawing board.

it was interesting and I liked it, I even looked for the first mix after listening to this mix but it has been removed(probably by yourself after posting this one)

I didn't think it sounded like space grunge, it was creative and almost uncatagorizable.
which I think is wonderful, unique. original.

Thanks Mark, Julibee had a bit of a tough one she was more or less writing for a finished tune, thanks for listening and commenting.

Charlie, thank you, I think the mix is suffering from MP3 encoding the wave file sounds much more distinct.

I may stick a higher bit rate version on another site lets see what happens.

Thanks again to all whom have listened.

    Hi John & Julibee,

Hey, this is really cool. And also really unexpected...very nice.

Although I kinda agree with some of the crits/suggestions made by previous posters the overall retro coolness of the tune works for me.

Thanks Gary true there are some rough edges but we did it in about three weeks which includes the time Julibee needed to be able to find the time to write the lyrics, busy lady that she is and I am not complaining.  I was also looking for a slightly less than perfect feel.

I'm really digging the remix of this John.

Since James mentioned the "Curved Air" vibe, i'm getting that too. I loved their early stuff.

You're playing some lovely melodic bass runs in this that really enhance the track.

Jules does a great job as usual. I think some occasional spacey-type echo on some of her words word enhance the spacey vibe.

    Great job, both of you.

Many thanks John your comment and time are appreciated.  Julibee was real good considering what I gave for her to work with, she added her magic to this.

I hear what you say the MP3 is not as nice as the wave some things have definitely gone missing in the encoding.

Thanks again, been listen on Soundcloud to some of your stuff very enjoyable.
