I am getting a ton of spam from this forum? Am I the only one?

Hello,
Welcome to the Cakewalk forums!
You were subscribed to the entire SONAR X Series forum, which means any posts you will receive an email notification for (whether it's a spam post or not). I just unsubscribed you from this forum. You can manage this in the User Control Panel.
In general I make a point to only subscribe to threads that I'm involved in or take an interest in versus an entire sub forum (which will result in hundreds of emails a day). This will also keep you from getting subscription notices when spam does unfortunately get posted.

No, you're not the only one. The spam resides on the forum, and everyone sees it. It's been an ongoing issue. You can flag the posts as spam, and when they get flagged by three different members they'll be removed.

I flagged over a dozen this morning, but at least Cake's solution of letting us flag them gets rid of them.

Although I think the OP was referring to notification emails (which Ryan addressed above), I also flagged several spammers last night (two from India and one UK kitchen spammer), but I was unable to post in the X Series forum (to bump a "real" thread). I kept getting that "Unknown Error" message. This happened once over the weekend as well. It continues for about an hour then something gets reset and you can post. This behavior only happens in the X Series forum too (not just me, James got it as well). Weird.
I will say that it's nice to see that the spammers don't get very far before they're nuked though! Good job to everyone who's been helping keep the forums clean!

I got the same as craigb today, could flag spam but not make any posts myself...I think once a post has been flagged 3 times and hidden this stops me from posting?

It shouldn't (and doesn't in any of the other forums). Just to be clear, I'm talking about posting in one of the non-spam threads just to have that topic title show on the Home page (removing the spam topic title).

Spam would disappear from this forum quicker if people would click "Flag as Spam" when they view it. There were about 10 pieces of spam last night that had around 16 viewers each, but I was only the 2nd person to flag each as spam.
If you're going to take the time to open and view a spam thread, please take the time to click "Flag as Spam" while you're there, and it'll help the forum clear spam faster.

You bring up a great point. I saw a lot of spam that had been viewed multiple times but only 1 or 2 flags.

Also why do you guys do the bump to remove spam in the lesser used forums? It's actually a bit annoying. And it seems kinda rude when a dude asks a questions and 6 hours later the only reply they got was "bump to remove spam", at least say hi. Some are first time posters.
Just sayin, otherwise I think your doing a great job but I still think it's a cop out solution where they have dumped this on the users instead of dealing with it at the admin level.

FWIW "bumping" the posts to remove what is showing up on the forum home page isn't actually necessary. When an admin goes through and permanently deletes the posts it refreshes the view. If you ask me this is a bug/poor implementation in the forum software. If a post is flagged and not visible, it shouldn't show up as cached anywhere. I'll make a request to the forum dev to see what he thinks. FYI - nobody "dumped" this on users to deal with. If you think I'm/we're coping out on this then you haven't been sitting next to me as I've brainstormed multiple solutions and spent a lot of time trying to deal with it. On the home page the title of the last topic modified is shown. Unfortunately, even after a spammer's thread has been flagged three times (and is removed from that particular forum), their topic title remains. In a few cases these titles have been very inappropriate but, also, some people (like me) check the home page periodically to see if a new spammer has arrived. Leaving the title there in either case is not a good option (just another "feature" of our wonderful forum software). While we could start a new topic, like I had to in the Developer forum, I didn't think it would hurt to simply bump the most current topic. In fact, bumping it might get people to actually realize they haven't helped out the original poster.

Heh - I was posting while Ryan was but I completely agree with him. We're just doing the best we can with what we have (the reasons for doing the title change were in my prior reply - they can sit there for hours otherwise).
That would be really nice if the developer's could remove the title automatically!

Hehe yeah figured we were typing at the same time. The forum software does have a mechanism in the admin panel for refreshing certain panels, posts counts, etc. manually. Naturally this happens to take place when a thread is bumped, which is why that "fixes" it on the more dormant sub forums since it's forcing the view to be refreshed. What would be nice is if a thread was deleted it would hit that same method for refreshing the view.

Yep. Although their content is complete mumbo-jumbo, the India spammers seem to be smart enough to get through the setup capcha and know when the mods have gone home for the night or weekend so their threads stay longer.

Actually we begged CW to find a solution and in my view they did just that. No it isn't perfect but I do think it does give a way to be proactive to us all. I am very pleased by CW's solution. Its creative and it lets the membership be involved. I would like it understood that this did not come about out of the thin blue sky but rather a careful look at all the possibilities with a lot of pressure from unhappy forum members. There were debates here about it. A lot was said and it is clear to me that CW was looking at all of it. I think we should give CW a pat on the back for a job well done. It also appears you can't please everyone.
