Spectrum Analysis - where is best location

Hi - a question about where in the plug in chain is best to place a spectrum analyzer - prior to other fx or completely after them so you are seeing the results of accumilated affects??? And would this be much different when doing analysis on individual tracks, versus the Master bus on a mix, or on a final stereo mixdown..?

You put it in the place you want to analyze. Isn't is obvious?

I leave a spectrum plug on the master bus (or use the one that RME provides with the interface). If I solo a track and need to know what the fundamental or important harmonics are, so I can make eq adjustments, it's always there, and I get the information I need. It's mostly just to give me a starting place make eq decisions.

Jose, you're such a smartass. 100% correct, of course.

OP: it really does depend on why you're using the spectral display, what you're trying to accomplish. It's a versatile tool.

On a track, you might want to put one before effects and another after, to see what the effects are doing to your spectral balance. You might want one on the drum bus, another on the vocal bus, another on the reverb bus.

To check your overall balance on the mains, it should be the last plugin in the chain. Make sure to bypass it before exporting your final mix, just in case.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
