Spirit and Opportunity - the Mars Rovers
This 'video' with my sound track composition celebrates the extraordinary achievement of NASA and the two Mars Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. The originally planned 90 day operation continued for over six years until March 2010 when contact was finally lost with Spirit. Today, Opportunity is still going strong. I truly hope that one day these amazing servants of human-kind are returned to this Planet for the recognition and honour they so richly deserve. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWZT0HZW_rE Best Regards Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, excellent composition and sounds. I did hear some celtic references in this, and liked them. Somehow this reminded me of medieval knights preparing for an epic battle, filmed in glorious technicolor . Well done, Sir. Greetings, Rik

Hi Rik - Sincere thanks. I suspect the Celtic is inevitable because of my genes! In so very many ways, your description is precisely apt. I do see the Rovers as Knights on a quest, battling the terrain and weather on Mars - and of course, Mars is the God of War! Best Regards Malcolm

Lovely, inspiring piece of music, Malcolm, and very well orchestrated. As I recall, you do everything via hand entry in score view, right? Just astounding... I am in awe.

Hi Phil - Sincere thanks. Yes, the whole piece written via hand entry notation in score (Staff) view in HS 7 XL. All the instruments are from a very old version of Garritan Personal Orchestra (Kontakt Player 2) with Sonitus FX Reverb and a very light touch of Boost 11. Sonar may not be the best notation facility but I think it is criticised unfairly. It certainly works for me! Best Regards Malcolm

That is a great piece of work! I can hear the celtic influences. A nice collection of images. I think it is great that you combined video with the sound track, something that I would like to do someday in the future.

Hi Guitartrek - Sincere thanks. It's only quite recently that I started trying to create videos to go alongside my music. I suppose the reason was in part that it was fun to do. Also in part it's because I stand a better chance of people on other web sites where I post my music actually listening to my music if I provide visuals as well as sounds! The power of the silver screen! And the last reason is that it is a great aid to communicating what was in my mind when I wrote the piece. I am sure this piece wouldn't really work as well without the visuals. All the software I use to make the video is free (Windows Movie Maker and Photostage Slideshow Producer). I am sure I could make better videos if I spent a bit of money on better software but my real focus is on writing the music. That is difficult enough for me! Best Regards Malcolm

great as ever Malcolm! some of your best writing here i think, the actual scoring is superb. you have certainly rung the most out of that old Garritan vsti! this could easily be a lost Bax or Bridge piece, with a little American influence thrown in! (all those major chords!)

Hi Mark - Sincere thanks. That old Garritan vsti has certainly been worth the money and I hope I can squeeze a few more tunes out of it yet! There are some days I just love major chords and clearly it was one of those days when I jotted down this piece! Lots of strident chords just seemed right to me! But it does gives me the shudders to think of those two fantastic Rovers being left on Mars all alone. It sort of redefines the word lonely. Looks like I am heading for a minor chord moment! Best Regards Malcolm
