Spitfire Audio - Two new Labs instruments (Free with a £2 donation)

NEW LABS INSTRUMENT: PLUCKED GRAND

One of the finest pianos in the world, in one of the finest rooms.... Abused. For our own esoteric desires!
In need of a lead instrument that has no obvious providence but a naturally inspiring enigmatic beauty all of its own? The Spitfire Plucked Grand Piano may be a good place to start... For hours upon hours the hall at Air studios, London played host to Paul Thomson leant over the sound board of this large concert grand piano, literally plucked and picked his nails and fingers into a manicurist’s nightmare. Coupled with Spitfire’s ability to produce and curate samples that sparkle with life, whilst being able to assemble and script an instrument that just works “out of the box”, the Plucked Grand module is a must have for any respectable composer in need of something “different”.

NEW LABS INSTRUMENT: PYLONS

Ever had that feeling that the track you’re working on just sounds too “nice”? Back in Christian Henson’s dance days working with the likes of LTJ Bukem and the Freestylers, a term was coined to describe how to best “f@*k up” a beautiful sonic landscape that had maybe got a bit flowery or “intelligent”. “Just sling a couple of pylons on the track and it will be fine...” - in the same way that a beautiful countryside can have some looming electricity pylons marching across it.

Christian has teamed up here with top production duo The Flight (Lana Del Ray, Bjork, Orbital, Rufus Wainwright) to create a definitive collection of phrases, squeaks, bleeps, hits and FX from their enormous selection of classic vintage synths.

I just picked up both of these and I have to say that the Plucked Grand is one of the best sounding instruments I own. It is absolutely gorgeous and absolutely inspiring to play. I seriously believe they could have released it as a full-priced retail product and it would have sold in droves. For a £2, you'd be crazy not to pick it up. Pick up a few others Labs instruments while you're at it. There are some real gems hidden in there!

Plucked Grand is really good. I bought the original one a while ago and its sonic core can be had for £2 now while supporting charities like Unicef.
Kudos to Spitfire for doing this and making great sounds accessible.

What's the original one that you're referring to? The only other plucked piano I can find on Spitfire's site is the Plucked Upright, also in their Labs range.

This: http://www.guitarcenter.c...tfire/Plucked-Piano.gc
and here's its manual: http://files5.bestservice..demo_files/00007372.pdf
but I guess it's being discontinued now, although the LABS version is a reduced version of the original, yet at a sweet price. Spitfire do make wonderful libraries, even in LABS.

Yeah! I could have sworn I had seen a Spitfire plucked piano on their site before. I wonder if the Labs one is made from the same samples as the full version. It's strange that they discontinued it without an announcement. We all know how Spitfire loves to announce that they're discontinuing something!

They did, they wrote me a nice email as an owner of the original version. When I asked, they explained that the LABS version of the library is reduced in terms of microphone choice and number of patches from the original. So, definitely a great bargain, this new LABS version at £2.

That plucked grand does sound beautiful......are there any other Lab ranged instrument you can recommend?? (not so much the wacky instruments, but more of the musical ones).

The Soft Piano is legendary. I bought the full version (Felt Piano) but still sometimes find myself using the Labs one. Other recommendations are Peel Guitar, Scary Strings, Mandolin, Henson's Frozen Strings, and Harmonic Piano. I own several others, but these are the standouts for me.

Yep, Mesh, definitely Soft Piano, Peel Guitar and Frozen Strings. And now Plucked Grand. Check that Kalimba too, it's on YouTube somewhere. But they're all lovely, maybe apart from Kitchen Sink.

I got the Pylons. Just listen to the audio demos on the page. Not much more to say about them. Just some neat/strange sounds created by various synths.
