Spitfire IRON DRUM

Dear Spitfire Labs User,
We are absolutely delighted to announce having passed the £10k milestone with our Unicef campaign and wish to heartily thank you for your contribution in that respect. We’re now the 4th biggest contributor to Unicef UK via PayPal, a remarkable achievement, long may this continue.

To mark this achievement we have purpose built a whole new little lovely just for you guys.

Recorded at Air-Edel studios specifically for the LABS, the Iron Drum is a heavy iron drum with 6 “resonators” that feel not unlike a chunky hand drum. It has a beautiful mellow tone that’s both familiar (like a nicely tuned steel drum) whilst being difficult to place exactly (or is it a vibraphone of some sort?). We have recorded it 4 ways, with a rubber beater muted and unmuted: 5 round robins, 2 dynamic layers, and with hand strikes both muted and unmuted again recorded with 5 round robins at a single soft dynamic layer.

This is available, as always, for free provided you donate another £2 to Unicef via the LABS.

What a great idea.  Get some interesting instruments and give something to a worthy charity at the same time.  Can do.

@Carl...do they have any audio demos of the labratory stuff??

This is all I could find, if you decide to register you'll see these descriptions posted in your account area.

Toy Piano £500 of spoiled posh-kids toy purchased from Chappell’s of Bond Street, recorded with dynamic layers at Air-Edel for a dry controllable sound. This instrument features heavily in the computer game score of Zubo and can be heard HERE.

Felt Piano This is one of Christian and Paul’s favourite private patches, having become a workhorse within many of Henson’s film scores. It is especially proud in the haunting “Triangle” for an example listen HERE. It was produced as a means of reducing Paul & Christians reliance on the immensely popular Malmsjo Grand so has been recorded at one dynamic layer (pianissmo) with the practice mute engaged. But with an additional resonance pass with the sustain pedal on.

Jazz Vibraphone Recorded dry at Air-Edel for that controllable sound. CH finds it great to layer this against other sounds like Celestes or his Wurlitzer as you can hear HERE. By using a tremolo plug-in (the one bundled with Logic is excellent for this purpose) to imitate a trem’ motor for that traditional post-modern “lift music” sound. This is sampled diatonically at soft dynamic levels for that laid back lounge sound.

Charango The Charango is a small Andean stringed instrument of the lute family, 66cm long and made with the shell of the back of the armadillo. Christian says, “This may only be a small file, but this is the big one for me. I sampled this in my studio (excuse the sound of Soho in the background), with my brother some 6 years ago. We struck upon the idea of “let’s make every note sound totally different”. The end result is what inspired me to talk to Paul about making our own sample library. I can’t believe I’m giving this one away, it’s like watching your first-born head off to college. It’s been a great friend to me, but I guess it’s time I move on”. This has been recorded chromatically with 4 dynamic layers and quite a lot of noise in the background!

    Dry Dulcimer
Recorded especially for this Christmas give-away by CH at Air-Edel studios for that dry, controllable sound. With two dynamic levels and 5 round robins per hit, plus a pass of tremolando with release triggers and some swipes and effects. These are all available in the same patch and can be keyswitched between A0 (hits), A#0 (trem), and B0 (fx). A quick tip, when switching back from tremolando to hits the release triggers don’t trigger so the tremolando stop dead. CH recommends re hitting the key when you want the trem note to end (with a bit of practice easy to do live, or just a quick pass in your matrix editor with a pencil!). BEST DEMO SENT TO US HERE AT SPITFIRE WILL BECOME OUR OFFICIAL DEMO SAMPLE ON THIS PAGE WITH A LINK TO YOUR SITE

Iron Drum Recorded at Air-Edel studios specifically for the labs the Iron Drum is a heavy iron drum with 6 “resonators” that feels not unlike a chunky hand drum. For the hand struck articulations we have a clever left hand thumb mute function that allows for the creation of complex rhythmic patterns. The file is 168MB to download exclusively free from this site with a minimum £2 donation to Unicef. There is a PDF manual enclosed in the download with instructions on us
