http://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/sacconi-strings-vol-1/ Listen to the audio demo ("Politics Of The Drawing Room"), or watch the walk-thru video above that. Screams "audience perspective". When I think of string quartet, I don't expect that; most SQ recordings that I've heard - performances or libraries - are recorded up close and personal.
In any case, I received a reply from Spitfire. Here's what they had to say:
"The mic placement for the Sacconi quartet is a more classical approach than the super dry pop quartet sounds a-la Eleanor Rigby. The distances for the close mics were between 1 and 2 metres in front and above the violin, which is reasonably typical if not slightly close for a classical ensemble.
The hall, of course, has an effect on the distance factor for these close mics, they will sound more reverberant due to the hall noise on them than a dry room that would be used for pop.
Regardless, the mix is in your hands as ever - and the close can sound very close if you need them to!"
So it seems to confirm what I'm hearing. I'm still not clear on how "very close" it can sound (I'm hearing a lot more hall effect than 1 or 2 metres), so it's possible those demos simply aren't at the closest setting.
I know this won't be a big deal to some users, but to those of us who expect the dry, up-close option, it's starting out as a bit of a disappointment, especially for such an otherwise detailed library (but again, I'm only going on the available demos so will wait for more that will hopefully show the closest perspective).
