Split one MIDI keyboard between multiple VST instruments

Hi,

I have Yamaha DGX piano that I am using as a MIDI keyboard for Sonar X1 (64bit) and I need to split the keyboard between two synths. Lower keys for piano (True pianos), upper keys for trumpet (Dimensions Pro).

I do not know how to do it (I am sure it cannot be done directly on the keyboard) so I think I need some SW solution. Probably in a form of plugin or standalone application.

Can you help please and suggest how to deal with this?

Thanks.
Marek

Best Regards,
Marek

You can use a midi fx plugin for this:

Track Doorman or JamBuddy might be some to use.

There might be something shipped with Sonar as well, I don't remember.

take a read through your keyboard manual.. if it is capable of playing splits standalone, then very often the splits are available via midi

The MIDI Event Filter MFX in SONAR may help.

The easiest way, if your piano supports it, is to split the keyboard and assign different MIDI channels to each zone. Some synths can do this, some cannot. Check your DGX manual.

If you can't do it that way, follow Steve's advice above. Insert the MIDI Event Filter on each MIDI track, check the "Notes" option and specify the range of note values for each one under the "Key" slider.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Most of the DGX range of Yamaha keyboards are not multi-timbral, and only transmit on midi channel 1, and although they have a split command, it is only applicable to its local sounds, to the best of my knowledge.  I have used one of these keyboards for several years now, both for gigs and as a controller for recording in Sonar.

If the above suggestions do not give you what you want - I will try to play around with that some, later tonight, and will post back my findings sometime in the wee hours.
