Split/Make Instrument Tracks Made Automation Lanes Disappear

I like to use instrument tracks to keep the midi clips and automation linked together, but I had to Split Instrument Track in order to copy and paste automation across projects (unless I split it would not paste corresponding automation lanes even though both were using the same Track template).  Anyway, now my instrument is split and that's done.

However, when I try to go back with Make Instrument Track, any automation lanes going to the synth itself (in this case Ultra Analog 2) are hidden.  Automation lanes for volume and for the plugins have stayed, but not the ones on the synth. In fact there is no way to add new automation lanes for the synth as none of its channels are in the dropdown.  The old ones are still working, however - you can hear them - they just not see or interact with them in any way.

Anyone have this happen and know how to get them to reappear?

It depends on the track where the synth automation is located. It will disappear if the automation is attached to the synth audio track. The synth automation will remain visible if attached to the MIDI track. This assignment may be made in the Insert Synth Options Dialog "Display Automation On:" drop down. The assignment may be changed in the Synth Rack by select the synth in the rack and changing the track assignment in the "Synth Automation Menu."

That did it!  Wow, such a crazy interface!  I was sure it was a bug and I was out of luck.  But part of the reason I stick with Sonar is just how reluctant I am to start over learning all the crazy idiosyncrasies lurking in *other* DAWs.

Instrument tracks have been a work in progress since their inception and they continue to improve. There are still a few "features" missing from instruments tracks such as "MIDI envelopes" in the track view and treating instrument tracks as a subset of MIDI tracks when filtering what to see in the Console view. Still they are convenient as long as one is aware of their limitations.
