Splitting drums onto separate tracks

Hi all,

I want to do the above so I can put diff effects onto snare, kick etc. How you do do it? Create several instances of velocity, or can you use track layering with just one instance?

Cheers

    cb8rwh,
In Velocity you can send each cell (drum sound) to a different output. I believe there are up to 8 seperate outs in Velocity if I'm not mistaken. Each cell's default out is the Main out ... it is a small letter M in the corner of each cell. Put your mouse over it and drag up or down to select the desired output you want to send that sound to. On the track in P5 that Velocity is opened up on be sure to right click and unbypass the other outputs you are now using. P5 seems to always default to bypassing multi-outs except for the main. Now, P5 only shows one output at a time for multi out synths, so to select wich output is "seen", locate the numeral 1 on the track that Velocity is opened up on and use your mouse to scroll up and down to the desired output.
Hope that helps ... have fun

Thanks for your help Seth, worked a treat.

You can only have 5 different outputs, but that is more than enough.

    Cheers again

It's also nice to use layers for drums. So create a velocity track and then add more layers. You can add as many layers/track as you need. Always add 1 more layer than you need, and don't put any clips in the top layer/track. For example, suppose you want three layers: one for kick, one for hats, and one for snare/claps/toms. Create 3 extra layers so you have 4 in total. Now you can use the top empty layer for muting all the sub-layers. If you don't do this and you want to mute all the drums you have to mute each layer separately.

    thats a great tip sluggo,

could you also put an effect over the whole lot using that method? i.e. put an effect on the initial layer?

    Cheers

No, that doesn't work. I believe each track/instrument can have up to 4 outs. The layers act independantly from the outs. Outs are controlled either by midi (note, channel, etc) and how the dxi deals with these messages.

Sluggo, you're right about layers ... they are great! Thats prolly my fav new feature in V2. Layers are great for arranging, wether its for drums or for for multitimbrle synths like DS864 or Sampletank.
