Square 1 Synthesizer

Just yesterday I installed Sonar Home Studio Version 4 XL. It is my first time using a Cakewalk product, though I have used other free programs before. I am really liking this one, though.

I wouldn't say that I have had a lot of experience with home recording (or recording in general), but I think I have some of the basics down.

Anyway, I tried to mess around with the square 1 synthesizer on a guitar track I recorded, but whenever I add it to the effects, it's like I've muted the track. There's no sound.

I'm completely boggled by the controls for the synthesizer, and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction as far as learning how to use this thing.

You don't add it to a guitar track as an effect. It needs a MIDI track as input.

I think I am missing something. Square 1 is listed as an effect for only audio tracks, not midi. So how would I apply it to a midi track?

You place it in an audio track but then you route a midi track TO it. It produces audio so it goes in an audio track but it can't do any kind of processing on wave data that might be in that audio track. It is not for use as an audio effect. It is a sound generator that requires MIDI data telling it what notes to play.

Take the tutorial on using softsynths.

    Basically you just:
    1) View-Synth Rack
    2) Click the Insert DXi button (looks like an asterisk)
    3) Click on Square1 - Check First Synth Output and Synth Property Page checkboxes. It will create an audio track with the Square1 as the device.
    4) Go to the MIDI track and change the output to Square1

    Thanks.

I had skipped Tutorial 8 because it was midi stuff, and I haven't yet figured out how I'm going to hook up my keyboard to my laptop (I've never knowingly done any midi recording). Of course, tutorial 8 ends up being the one I wanted. Oh well. I'll know better next time.

    Thanks again.

To hook up your keyboard to your laptop you could use a USB MIDI interface like the M-Audio MIDISport 1x1.

I'm just curious (Slightly off-topic, sorry)...
Does Sonar PE also come with Square 1 Synth or something similar?
I'm a big analog synth user and I like the sound of that program.

I read around to see if the PE comes with anything like this, but it's obviously not a big selling point and couldn't find it mentioned.
    Thanks!

Sonar V5 comes with PSYN (subtractive synth) and Pentagon (analog-style synth). You can download Square 1 and Triangle from websites for free. Both are monophonic analog-style synths.

Square is neither free nor monophonic.

I can confirm that the square synth is polyphonic. I was pleased to discover this because I've been using the triangle synth for a while - I love the sounds but it is monophonic!

It's a shame that the square synth doesn't come with any stored presets as all the others do.

    Cheers,

You're right. I was thinking of Synth1 DXi, which is free.

You're right. I was thinking of Synth1 DXi, which is free.

...but is also polyphonic (unless you configure it otherwise).

sorry...somehow I missed that this had already been pointed out. Couldn't find a way to delete the post.
