Staff View Improvements

Over the years I have been outspoken about my disappointment in Cakewalks failure to implement some basic improvements and fixes to the Staff view, so much so, that in the last year I gave up. After over a decade of nothing, I knew it was falling on deaf ears. Cakewalk are a bunch of old rock guitarists who just don't care about staff view. I have been annoyed at others who fixated on their wants from a program felt we shouldn't be distracting from what their image of a good DAW should really be. Often telling me to get a third party notation program, even though it's the integration with the rest of my mix and composing I wanted to the staff view improvements for.

My own desires were based around helping me become more competent with reading music, and helping withsimple composition ideas, harmonizing, and covering songs to help improve my playing skill. With schools typically being PC based, teaching music and IT, to kids that liked dance music and hip hop, I felt they were missing out on a academic group that would help attain more future musicians.

I signed up to lifetime membership, I felt lucky that my purchase history gave me the best deal on this. But due to the long term failure to tackle this aspect of the program that they liked to boast about in their features, I was glad to no longer pay any further. In the time I subscribed to Lifetime, I loved some of the features provided; tempo maps, velocity transform, ripple editing, and so even though this lifetime offer has come to an end, I don't feel hard done by.

On hearing the news, I was disappointed, of course, it's a massive shame to close this company, for development to end, and for people to loose their jobs making a product that is simply amazing. I felt disappointed, and felt sad, but not surprised, and not really angry. I haven't commented on what has happened.

Today I read a post from Sonic Scores developer
http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3699129

And for the first time I felt angry. I suddenly realized I was storming around my apartment. Frustrated that if maybe another year had passed, that this oh so nearly perfect DAW for me, could have been made perfect for my desires. Angry that Gibson had road blocked the deal and the Cakewalk team still perused it,  and it was oh so close.

To realise this was going on in the background at the time I gave up faith,  I would like to send out my thank you to the Cakewalk team for trying for me and the other persistent posters fighting for this cause.

Thank you Cakewalk

That the Bakers were still able to put out quality improvements under those conditions speaks to their real dedication not only to their company but us users as well.

Just imagine so many of us up in arms about notation and all the time there was a solution that the Bakers weren’t allowed to implement because of Gibson.

I opened Sonar this morning and immediately closed it wondering what other things may have developed had the Bakers really had a free hand. Sounds like Gibson drove it into the ground. Grrrrrr!

It must have really rankled the Bakers to see folks griping (legitimately) about the staff view, know that they had a fix lined up that got shanked by the parent company for no particular reason (so it seems, anyway), and they couldn't even defend themselves or explain it to us...

Sonar Platinum, Windows 10 Pro 64, Core i7-5820K Haswell-E CPU, 32GB DDR4 RAM, RME Babyface, Adam F7 monitors, Mackie MCU

I only ask because I am one of those "old" rock guitarists.
But are the new generation of kids using Staff view ?
One must ask himself, are your methods just as old as theirs ? ?

I believe the methods are older. After all Gibson blocked the update.

You've missed the point.
No, but music departments would. And a program capable of meeting their needs and the desires of the students would be great exposure fr the program.

Logic for example, wouldn't in general because it's mac based, unless it was a private school.

Having now got Cubase 9.5 I was having a little play to see how it works and recorded some live midi. I had a look on the staff view and saw a bunch of little 3s all over the place! Good grief I thought, I didn't think DAWs could recognise triplets.
Goodbye Sonar, thanks for some good (and not so good) times.....

Grum.
