Starlight in the Sky - new version 6/1 Thanks, all!
This just got bumped by SeriousNoize--I haven't worked on it--or any other recordings--for at least two years and don't have any plans to pick it up again soon. Feel free to just move on to other songs on the forum. Or listen and comment. :) Just don't be offended if I don't do anything with it. Cheers! :) I'm just going to start a new thread with this one. Warren W. was a huge help in getting a great (REAL!) bass part on this for me. He's extremely easy to work with and extremely anxious to please. So, here 'tis. He gave me tips on the mix, but the final here is my fault. Crits welcome. Thanks again! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=789731&songID=13106172 June 1 - I lowered the bass in the mix and have the strings and cello come in a bit later. Also got rid of the bass glitch at the end. Thanks so much everyone! How's this?

Janet, this bass makes the song work very well. It rounds out the piano and vocal and gives this a very professional quality. The only thing I heard was a little pop at the end of the bass line which can easily be removed with a quick fade out at the end of the last note. Otherwise, this is a gem!

Janet, Great ballad that show-cases both you and Robbie. Very fluid/flowing piano with Rockin' singing in a lower register than I am used to. Great tone on his part. The bass really locks down the rhythm and gives the spare arrangement depth. Good stuff. Cheers, Bert

The new bass is a big improvement. I'd pull it back a little (~3 dB) in the mix, though. Another thing I'd do is let the piano carry the intro and first verse alone, holding back the strings until "a picture to remember...". I'd also consider thinning the strings out at first, perhaps with just a cello coming in initially and gradually widening the chords as the song progresses. Song dynamics are a challenge with minimal instrumentation, so you have to figure out ways to let the tune build. Regardless of how you address it, though, it's still gonna be a darn fine tune.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Thanks very much, Lynn! Thank you, Phil! Thank you very much, Bert! Well, Bit, I was gonna pull this one down and call it good...then you came along! lol Thanks very much for your input. That really helps. Great ideas and I'll see if I can make those work. Hopefully I can find time before long. Thanks again!

You did a nice job, Janet. Ha I hear the bass glitch at the end. I don't know how I missed it. Well, lucky it's at the end and it is easy to fix. I've always enjoyed working with you, Mamabear!

Wow...not sure how I missed this one! Beautiful song. Great singing by Robbie and exquisite piano by yourself. I agree the bass is a really nice addition to it:)

I thought the strings were ok and worked well where they were, but I thought the bass was a bit loud, or not high passed enough, in some parts. The rest of mix was great and I felt I could hear everything nicely placed and well balanced.

Lovely tune, wonderful musicianship and awesome expressive vocals from Robby. Warren tops it off nicely with a well crafted and delivered bass line. Loved it!

Well Janet...I just like the song. In fact I went and listened to a few of your songs and I just like what you do. I was born in Texas, spent time "on the prairie".....I think I hear the wind blowing through your music. Best wishes Billy

Hi Janet! As always, your music is beautiful and I think you did a hell of a collab with Robbie. I never heard the original so I'll take the others' word for it that the bass was an improvement. Hehe!

Yes, I changed my name . No longer using Dreambliss... I like Basradaem much better. It's the name of a fictional planetary system in a sci-fi novel series that I'm attempting to write. It has been a while. I've kind of disappeared off of Facebook as well as here. With so much going on in my life and several different hobbies, I have a tendency to be all over the place. Sometimes I just find myself spinning around in my chair.
