Start Time and Track delay ??
Hi I use Sonar X3 and recently added a VST (Ample Guitar) which is great for someone like me who can't strum in time. Ample Guitar talks about setting Track time and Track Delay? I have no idea what they are talking about can anyone help please? Cheers jorel

hmmm I don't know the plug in. Sometimes plugins introduce some latency. Sonar automatically measures this latency and aligns everything to play together, regardless of the latencies. So, you as a user will experience whatever the greatest latency is, but if other tracks have less latency, they will be adjusted to play in time with the track with the greatest latency. You can nudge tracks forward and backwards in time using the Channel Tools Plugin if you want or just nudge the clip yourself. If you go into preferences > Audio > Driver Settings... you should see the reported latency and total round trip latency. This is only useful when considering setting your buffer size (for me anyway). Sound travels roughly 1 foot per millisecond, so 2 millisecond latency is equivalent to having your guitar 2 feet away. PDC = Plugin Delay Compensation http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation/default.aspx?Doc=SONAR%20X2&Lang=EN&Req=Recording.23.html Does this help?

I don't use this instrument either, but I can make an educated guess... With a real guitar, the very first sound that comes out is the scrape of the pick as it starts stretching the string. When the tension on the string exceeds the friction of the pick, the string snaps back and begins to oscillate, producing the tone. Consequently, there is a brief period of time between initially applying the pick and the main sound of the string's vibrations. Guitarists unconsciously compensate for this by picking the string very slightly ahead of the beat, something a MIDI track can't do. What they're doing is offering a way to offset the sample playback so the pick noise begins a few milliseconds ahead of the MIDI note. By the time the main sound component reaches full volume, it should land where you expect to hear it. This should, in theory, add to the realism of the instrument.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Thanks for the information. I sort of guessed that's what was being said. How do you actually set this is up in X3 as I have never seen it mentioned before.. jorel

As gswitz says above, there are several ways to nudge tracks inside Sonar, you just pick the one you find easiest. Options include: - Nudge
- Click & drag
- Audiosnap
- Channel tools
I'm sure there are more, but it's dinner time!!

Hey, Jorel. You can do an offset in the MIDI track (lower right). Put in -4, or -10, or whatever to make the hits earlier. (Can't say the exact number without knowing what your clock settings are.) With a clock setting of 120 in Preferences, I would probably start with -3 or so and see how it sounds. If your clock is at the default (960 ticks per quarter), you might start with -20 or so and go up or down from there. Too early will sound worse than too late so be careful. I am willing to bet you don't need much offset. I never offset RealGuitar unless I am using two instances, in which case I make one a few ticks early and one a few ticks late. NOTE: If you use two MIDI tracks, one for the chords and one for the keyswitches used for strumming, be sure to offset both the same amount. This definitely applies to RealGuitar, but I don't know about Ample since I don't have it yet. By the way, most people on this forum know I am a huge RealGuitar (MusicLab) user and put it on pretty much every track I cut. Based on your post, I checked out Ample Guitar and it looks pretty cool. I may add that--not because I am unhappy with RealGuitar (which I love), but because it is always good to have different guitar sounds in the arsenal. That is the reason I bought Acoustic Legends HD which is great for solos but only fair for strumming. EDIT: Whoa, I see that Ample has a Taylor version. OK, I'm sold.

Hi Thanks you for your replies. Konrad many thanks. Got the -50 just was not clear on how to set it. I have real Guitar and Real Strat and wait for it...Ample Guitar Taylor AGT. Perfect love it as strumming is not my strong point. jorel
