Start of the journey

I don't normally post Songs here - there's a lot of impressive stuff, so noobs need to take a deep breath...

Anyway, there's a couple of reasons for this post: first, I'm mixing entirely on headphones right now (long story) so I'd be interested in relative mix comments.

Second, I've only recently started playing guitar, like 3 weeks ago.  Aside from the suspect playing, balancing guitar tracks into the mix is a challenge in itself so again feedback would be much appreciated.

Oh, hope you might like the song as well - bit of a Prog effort in 7/4 - hence the name: 7/4 Mix 1.

Guitar is a friend's Strat (he's setting my one up) via a Zoom G2 unit Direct In to the SPS-25.

Enjoy,

Wood

Wood...that 7/4 is a real tricky one to fall into at first but then I did fall in.....it is a hook in it's own way.
Weird but i thought the verb on the kick made it sound artificial compared to the more ambient space on the snare in the exposed places.
Those chords on the organ-  very nice.

That was a lot of fun to listen to.

Thanks guys.  Dream Theatre/Rush- you've been looking at my CD collection then!  I'm very flattered.  My band of the moment is Porcupine Tree of which this is probably most derivative (the original drum pattern and time signature is from one of their tracks).

7/4 can be very seductive.  It gives a kind of swing feel while still offering a headbangin' 4 on the floor opportunity.

I need to tighten up the guitar syncopation, but I can see the appeal of hard rock/metal.  Great fun.

Edit: NoHow.  The kit is from the free DrumCore that was on the cover of last months Computer Music mag.  I didn't add any verb to the kik, but did add some ambience to the snr.  On listenting again there is a bit of a fluffy verb placed on the kik at the recording stage.  I might try balancing the kit a bit more - keep thinking the snr is too high up, as is the 14ths(!) shaker.

Oh, great, another phenom!  I like this music and thought all instruments were well played.  Three weeks and play with taste beats 3 years and no taste.  Nice job!!

Only took up guitar three weeks ago? That's pretty impressive for a beginner. You sound better than i was after three months. .

Loved the trippy, dremy atmosphere in this. The part when the bass first came in over the pads was really nice.  I'm always up for a bit of prog so i conneceted with this quite easily.

On the evidence of this track it sounds like you have a bright future ahead of you. Good one.

Thanks all - much appreciated. I was pleased with the guitar, but not as pleased as the knowledge that it's very easy to punch in/out and make a lot of comps in Sonar :)  I'll press ahead with another...

    Hi Wood67,

I'm late to the party, I know, but I did want to take the time to let you know that I am impressed with, your playing (as mentioned above, you are picking it up real fast) and the quality of your mix. This is good for a headphone job, and you should be proud of the results. Nice vibe all around. Very well done!

And I'm REALLY late to the party.  I've had my nose stuck in my studio for at least a week and knew I had some catching up to do here.  I had to find this on the second page!

Anyway, there are some 7/4 beats in StormDrum that just baffle me.  It's cool to hear how you've made it work.  This is really really good.  I can't believe you only started playing 3 weeks ago?  Wow!!  And don't even be concerned about punching in and out... I've been playing the piano for about 105 years and I still have to edit the keys.  lol  Anyway, this is great.  You don't need to be worried about posting it here or anywhere!!

Love the vibe here.   Very adventurous and dreamy.   You have a nice
concotion of sounds.   I see you use DrumCore too.   I've been using it lately and really pleased.   Now I'm listening on headphones so take this lightly.   It seemed liked things got a pinch muddy for a brief moment around 2:40.   Otherwise good mixing and recording.

    Hi,

I like this a lot. The guitars sound nice, regardless of how long you've been playing. Especially like the clean rhythm tone. Very hypnotic.
