Starter Studio Monitor Recommendations

I am in the process in working on building my small studio in a 7'x8' room. Yes very small but compact and has a more 'all to myself' feeling when I am in my own world.

Would like some recommendations on some good starter monitors for my audio. Budget is around $500 (hopefully for a pair) but since I know some are separate I can take that into consideration too. I found older threads regarding some good starter monitors but they are over 2+ years old. Knowing how fast things can go obsolete, I wanted to see if there are any current monitors that are worth looking into.

Thanks for any help.

    the powered KRK's work well.
    KRK Rokit 6
    also:
    Yamaha MSP5 Studio
    Tannoy Reveal 501a

for about 200 bucks more, this is what i would suggest:
    Yamaha HS80M

I recommend the Yamaha HS80.  If you can get one of those 15% coupons that are offered regularly by the big box music stores (musicians friend, GC, etc) then the price of the HS80's are closer to your range.  They were on sale at the local GC store and with my discount I paid $550 or so   I went in looking for JBLs and left with the Yamahas.  Go to your local store and check some of them out.

I would be worried about the 80s in such a small room.  The MSP5s would probably be a better fit, and find somewhere else to check the bass.   otherwise, the small yamas will be about as flat as you will find at that price.

For a small set - I'd recommend M-audio Bx5 A.  There's a sale on them at Musicians friend right now. They sound good to my ears. I have a pair - They seem to not be too hyped and are reasonably responsive down to about 50 hz. I wouldn't use them if you're wanting to mix hip hop or trance or whatever that really over kills the low end. I use visual monitoring for anything 40 hz or lower anyways.

In a room that size you probably don't need too much bass extention.

Yamaha SH50M might be a possibility and seem well regarded by many. If you can afford more, I'd suggest  Genelec 8020b are worth a listen, or the smaller Adams.

If the current Tannoy Reveal5s are anything like the old version they're very strong in the low mids, with little treble and a very steep roll-off below about 200 Hz - no bass at all (I have a pair) - and the almost total lack of bass makes them very difficult to mix on.

    Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board,
ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre.
Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.
