Starting Midi Instruments (patch), Where?
I used cakewalk a lot around the 90's area and had many cakewalk midi programs of that period. But some things seem hidden in Music Creator 6. For example, I cannot find the starting information on a track - the start-up midi commands that give the patch (instrument) and perhaps there is more missing. I do not know. For example, if I load one of my old midi files, track 2 I will have put the word "bass" in long ago. However, that just names the track. I do not see even if use the four dot thing for advanced - I do not see a box for the instrument (patch) that is being used there. This is quite odd since the help information shows a different picture - one with the patch in a drop down box. Nope, I had something a drop down box that says "omni" and says it manages presets in the drop down. Volume, velocity and pan read out. But unlike the help file, I see nothing for the starting patch or how to change it. To be sure, a drop down from the top menu under "insert" allows a bank patch change somewhere along the line, but it does not seem to tell you what patch the line begins with. And even more odd - it does not even read out the patch that is currently there. It just claims it all is acoustic grand piano - even if it is a drum part. Anyone know how to find, show, and or change the starting patch (instrument) assigned to a midi file? Thanks

well - that depends on what you have set as your OUTPUT. the bank and patch information is obtained directly from the synth (hardware or software synth) that you have selected as the output of that MIDI track. what did you select as your OUTPUT for the MIDI track? let me clarify this just to be thorough - if you have your output set to a HARDWARE SYNTH then it will not "pick up" the bank and patch selections from the synth - you'd need an instrument definition file which has that information about your specific keyboard in it. and actually MC does not use ins def - you'd have to upgrade to Sonar X1 Essentials for that capability. but if you have your output set to a SOFTSYNTH then it DOES pick up the bank and patch information from it as long as there is bank and patch information to pick up. for example, if you're using TTS-1, it picks up the bank and patch information for all 256 patches plus drum kit pieces for all kits in the GM2 set. however, if you're using Cakewalk SoundCenter, there are no banks or patches to "pick up" because SoundCenter is monotimbral. you have to load a new instance of SoundCenter for each different patch you want to use. and the bank and patch information in the properties can just stay at the default setting because they don't matter for SoundCenter since there are not banks and patches to select - only the output of the MIDI track matters for SoundCenter and that you have loaded a patch in SoundCenter (double click on the sound you want to load in the menu inside SoundCenter's GUI)

Thanks for the screen shot, Reece. I would have directed him to select "All" from the drop down menu as it appears in X1. It would appear that the "4 dot" button serves the same purpose, and is unique to MC6. Is that correct? I don't want to derail the thread, but subtle differences like this can make it hard to help if we don't know about them.

I suggest HIGHLY, that if you are just returning to the world of CAKEWALK software that you watch the videos here: >>> http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/Music-Creator.aspx Much has changed in music production and recording in the last 5 years let alone 10 or more. We now have soft synths which sound better than the old wave table stuff and GM..... and yeah... everything you need is in MC6... but it's gonna take a little time to get to know your way around..... which is why I suggested watching the videos...ALL OF THEM..... so you can see and find all the basic stuff. Take the time to watch and work through the video tutorials Cakewalk has made to help you understand the ins and outs of this program. Then... if you still have questions, and you will, ask them here. We're always glad to assist. @ ROBERT.... yeah, all the versions recently have had some features or lack of, that are unique to them, and this is making it harder to give advice based on the older versions. I have to turn on the DAW and pull up the specific platform people are asking about to give the most accurate advice, at times.

it's just odd- I have no idea why it would have been deleted. there were no copyrights violated and no offensive material. I just answered the OP's questions with screenshots of how to expand the track.

wow! that's so frickin weird! there are only 9 posts that I see (this will be the 10th one!) post #2 does not have screenshots, post #4 is the only one in this thread that I see screenshots on! I even logged off and looked at this thread and I don't see anything different than what I saw while I was logged on! some of my posts in this thread I don't see. not only that but they're renumbered - all of the posts are in sequential order, but some of my posts are missing! how can I be sure that my posts are helping people if the same thing happens to them and they can't see the posts like I can't right now? Why can Herb see them and I can't?

Post #4 is the only one showing a screen shot. Your previous post with the screen shot that I asked about, is missing, as well as a post from the OP, I think. Many of us have been certain we replied to a post, yet it is not there later. I think it has something to do with the overall glitchiness of the forums. There was certainly nothing in your post to warrant being deleted by a mod. It's just gone. It interesting that the edit footnote indicates that you edited post #2 Feb 5 at 6:31AM, roughly 20 minutes after #4 was posted. Very strange.

Music Creator 6 can, a welcome feature. Beagle, maybe someone hacked into your forum account or photobucket account?

Beagle, maybe someone hacked into your forum account or photobucket account? that wouldn't explain it. one post in question where there were screenshots is completely deleted, not just the screenshots, the entire post. users can't delete posts - even their own.

no - then Bob would not have been able to respond with his post stating that he appreciated the screenshots. there are no screenshots in the post above him for him to appreciate. RobertB Thanks for the screen shot, Reece. I would have directed him to select "All" from the drop down menu as it appears in X1.
